Happy Birthday Diego
Mina's busy planning Winter Formal, and was up bright and early this morning. Diego may be gratified to learn that the first thing on her to do list today was sending off his birthday present for breakfast. Or maybe he's just hungover and missed breakfast. That's fine, Mina prepared for that eventuality.

A freshman in Event Committee was tasked with delivering Diego's present during breakfast (and if not during breakfast, then he'll try again during lunch. Somehow, Mina has the sense to not send someone directly to Azurcrest today). It's rectangular, immaculately wrapped in shiny blue paper that's been charmed with an animated pattern of falling snowflakes. The bows and ribbons are... elaborate. Think: multiple bows and ribbons, multicoloured string, a live sprig from a fir tree, a stick of cinnamon. It takes like ten minutes to unwrap.

Inside, Diego will find a handmade leather notebook filled with guitar tab paper. There's a small pocket sewn on the cover, for a guitar pick. There's also a card featuring a cross stitch of an iguana:

You're getting a CHRISTMAS PRESENT too,
DON'T WORRY. I wouldn't do that to you.
If you want it, you'd BETTER TRY NOT to
get yourself KILLED before then. Or
NEXT YEAR if you want me to bother
celebrating your birthday EVER AGAIN.

If there's anyone who can appreciate impractical aesthetics, it's Diego. The wrapping job that should have taken him 10 minutes takes him 15, because he spends extra time preserving each ribbon and pulling up the tape carefully so it doesn't tear the magical paper. Based on the way he's folded and put the wrapping and decorations aside, he's planning on keeping all of it. He has no idea what to do with it but it's too nice to throw away.

The notebook is amazing. Diego is chronically disorganized, and usually has several notebooks with scribblings of songs and lyrics in them. Something new and clean is both intimidating and exciting. The card is getting stuck to the ceiling above his bed.

He spends the rest of the day on the lookout for Mina, and when he spots her in the hall he gives her a quick I-don't-want-to-waste-your-time-but-thank-you hug.

	Oh my GOD, Diego. Mina appreciates him not taking up more time in her day than she's allotted in her schedule, but there's definitely a second in which Mina squeezes him back during this hug. But just one second. No one saw that. (Reply to this) (Parent)
