BIRTHDAY GROTTO PARTY

Light snow mixes with misty rain, but it means there’s not as much snow on the ground, even this late into December. It promises to come back with a vengeance tomorrow, but for now, the chill’s not bone deep. As always, the Grotto remains a little warmer than the surrounding woods, which are filled with mist. The mountains in the distance are completely obscured, creating an evening that’s either romantic or spooky, depending on how you feel about the forest.

Tonight, the Grotto is festive. Lights are strung from the trees and hang overhead, red and green. There’s the familiar roaring bonfire surrounded by assorted logs for sitting on, plus a handful of weather worn chairs probably stolen from the lodge in years past. Two of those stolen chairs are decorated to resemble tacky thrones for the birthday boys. Blinking Christmas lights adorn them. The looming stone building is full of the laughter, giggling and cheers of those playing kissing games. Spirits are high, even as the music shifts between bright, sparkling dance music (Levi) and dreamy, introspective folk (Diego). Everyone time your grinding and your slow dances for the right songs! In ice chests around the fire, there’s plenty of booze available, as well as juice and soda for mixing (fancy!) or drinking virgin. There are also snacks, although chances are it wasn’t Azurcrest that provided those. Take note of the bins for empty bottles and cans. Don’t litter, guys, seriously.

A new addition is a series of “borrowed” tents just beyond the bonfire. They’re full of blankets and pillows, and have generous warming charms cast inside them. Technically they’re meant for hanging out with a handful of friends (about 4 people can sit in them comfortably)... but if you claim one and zip up the flaps, most people will get the message: Do Not Disturb. (Remember to keep things PG-13, and fade to black if necessary!)

RULES

Teen peer pressure (and player sadism) aside, no one is obligated to do anything they don't want to. Characters doing Seven Minutes In Heaven can spend the time just talking or staring awkwardly at each other, and characters playing Spin The Bottle can opt out of a kiss (although people will probably boo).

If characters get up to anything more racy than PG-13, please fade to black on that! This includes sexually explicit conversations. Many people track IC/OOC posts, so please have consideration for your fellow players. Talking about sex is fine (and part of the flavour of a teen game), but there's no need to get into detailed descriptions of anatomy or sex acts.

If you'd like to say two characters were partners in STB or 7MIH in addition to what's been rolled, feel free! Obviously, get the permission of all involved characters first.

» Before the Party: It’s the last day of classes, and time seems to stretch on forever. How did you prepare for the party?

» Around the Fire: The bonfire’s built high and burning bright, so it’s quite cozy here. Cuddle, make s’mores, or dance to the jarring playlist! There’s a Karaoke setup for anyone who feels bold enough to sing along. If you don't care for music, there's beer and soda in the ice chests.

» Inside the Building: This may be where the kissing games are taking place, but there's still some room to just snuggle and chat.

» Kissing Games: This is where to post your character's reaction to their Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven Assignments!

Spin The Bottle: Everyone sits in a circle and takes turns spinning the bottle to find their partner. Anyone who squeezes in (or happens to be accidentally standing behind a gap in the circle) gets a shot at a kiss. People can leave and enter the game at any time. Participants will be encouraged by their drunken classmates to kiss on the mouth.
Seven Minutes in Heaven: "Heaven" is a narrow, closet-sized room adjacent to the main party, and is dark except for some cracks of light from the door. (The "door" being a heavy wooden board that's propped against the doorway and magically "locked" for seven minutes.) You can use your wand to get more light, but really, you two should be making out.

» Quidditch Beer Pong: Not far from the bonfire, Sy Stoker has set up a table with Quidpong. Nearby is a supply of red ping pong balls, Solo cups, and a waterproof signup sheet. Post your character/team under this heading to call for a challenger! Ask a friend to post results for you, or use the honour system. :)

» The Tents: Cozy up in one of these tents with a few friends… or just one friend in particular.

» The Woods: They’re mistier than usual, so don’t wander far. No one will be able to see if you leave the party…

» After the Party: The party only wraps up hours after midnight, and those who can still stand will help with the cleanup. Sometimes "cleanup" includes their drunk or dozing classmates. It’s cold out here, you should really go home!

Cole isn't entirely certain why he came tonight. He likes Diego and Levi but he doesn't feel like celebrating and he doesn't feel like socializing either. He's not certain what he does feel like doing, though. Ever since the Amortentia fiasco, he's been out of sorts; confused by his complicated and very one-sided feelings for Coralee Wong, disheartened by several artistic and magical failures (he rarely ever fails at anything, even when he doesn't try), and just strangely muted after the intensity of feeling created by the potion. His art has helped, his art always helps, but after the frantic work he's been doing for the play lately (double-checking every detail after the disaster with Coralee's dress not fitting properly) he's burned out.

So, since he arrived at the party, he's mostly been sitting by the fire and watching his classmates and drinking. That's what all of the others (especially the seniors) are doing and it seems to be making them happy, so he figures that it's probably worth a try? So far, though, he mostly just feels a little nauseous. This stuff tastes pretty terrible. But at least there's a lot to see here.

Ennis has had a successful first game of beer pong and is now participating in the dangerous game of drinking mixed drinks that don't taste like alcohol. Whatever's in his cup just smells like fruit punch and he can't get enough of it.

When Ennis spots his friend, he approaches him from behind and wraps an arm loosely around his neck in a lazy attempt at a hug. "Cole~!" His voice is still soft, but has taken on a dreamy quality to it. Ennis affectionately mushes cheeks with him before pulling back and taking a seat beside him. "Cole, isn't it wonderful? The forest is so lively tonight." Maybe he's talking about the ~energy~ of the atmosphere. Maybe he's just talking about how his vision is making the trees look like they're doing a lil shimmy-shake if he stares in one spot for too long. Whatever.

Cole's mind is still wandering when Ennis appears and he's unprepared to be hugged or nuzzled or otherwise touched by anyone, but once he realizes whos face is being pressed against his he does actually relax a little. He'd known Ennis was here, but he hadn't seen him so far tonight. He smiles briefly at his friend as he comes around to sit with him, then looks out at the trees. The forest around Gooseberry always has a certain strange beauty and an allure that he can't easily explain. He's drawn it dozens of times. But lively has never occurred to him as a descriptor.

"You think so?" he asks, genuinely curious.

Ennis can't see most of the forest for the creepy-ass fog, but he's confident that the accurate descriptor for it is definitely 'lively'.

"Don't you notice? It's always just a bit warmer here, like the forest is inviting us in to stay for a while. I think it's happy because we're happy. It likes for us to have fun, even if it can't join in. Our positive energy gives it positive energy." Ennis is convinced.

Cole turns back to look at Ennis, his confusion and unhappiness slipping from the forefront of his mind as curiosity asserts itself. It's inarguable that the Grotto is often warmer than other parts of the forest during the winter, but he's never given that too much consideration and he's certainly never attributed that to any kind of forest sentience. But Ennis seems certain. Then he remembers something. "I came out here once. To draw. It made me feel inspired. I lost track of time. I stayed all day. I...got in trouble, but it was nice while I was here. Do you think it's like that?" Nevermind the fact that this sort of thing happened to him all the time and in all sorts of places.

Ennis nods earnestly, ignoring the fact that... yeah, that could happen to Cole anywhere. "Did you feel like someone was watching over you while you were there alone? I come here some mornings to pray and meditate and I always feel like there are watchful eyes on me." He speaks as though he were being looked after by a benevolent deity-- by the Gods themselves, and not weird horned forest creatures that might be wary of intruders. "It always feels safe here? Like I'm in good hands. Do you ever feel it too?"

"Of course you can!" Ennis does a lot of sitting around and daydreaming and calls it 'meditation'. Same damn thing. "We can just sit and relax and feel the energy." He clinks his solo cup against Cole's bottle. "Oh-- I didn't know you drank beer? Do you want to try some of mine? I think it tastes a lot better?" It's fruit punch and vodka. Very sophisticated stuff.

Slowly, Cole smiles. "Okay. I don't know how to 'feel the energy'. But you can show me?" The tone in his voice makes it obvious that he thinks Ennis can show him and that he definitely knows what he's talking about in this very important matter. He doesn't seem to realize what Ennis is doing until after the cup and the bottle have already connected, but by then he's already missed the moment and all he can do is nod. Then he considers. "...I think so," he admits, "This tastes pretty bad."

	"If it tastes bad, then why are you drinking it?" asks the boy who would drink just about anything placed in his hands if enough peer pressure was applied-- the boy who would drink a flat soft drink as to not appear rude. "Everyone else is," Cole admits with a small shrug, reaching to accept Ennis' drink with his free hand and taking a small swallow. That faint alcoholic burn that he's still not accustomed to is there, but it's very subtle, and the rest of what he tastes is sweet. He blinks, then confirms, "You're right. It's a lot better." Leaving him to wonder why they even have the kind in the bottle to begin with. He offers the cup to Ennis again.
