For those who managed to produce a Patronus for the first time today, mazel tov!

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam,
shehecheyanu, v'kiy'manu, v'higianu laz'man hazeh.

Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the Universe,
who has granted us life, sustained us and enabled us to reach this occasion.

What does God have to do with anything?

It's a traditional Jewish prayer said when you do or see something for the first time ever or the first time that year. Basically, I felt really celebratory and decided to share that part of me.

At this point, my cabin mates are used to hearing Hebrew from me at various times. I forget that the rest of the school is a little less familiar with that.

Why, though? Doesn't God just know about it anyway?

Yeah. This is basically a "thanks for letting me be me and be able to be here for this moment." So it's kind of both a thank you and an acknowledgement that you are grateful you got to do or see this thing, because you know not everyone gets to.

That's so petty, though.

Being grateful you're alive and can enjoy life is petty?

Well I think it's beautiful that you're grateful you got to see this. Being able to produce a patronus and watch all of our classmates produce patronuses is no joke. It felt pretty magical.

Hello mortals! Please enjoy this vast spectrum of experiences and the beautiful world that I created just for you to fuck up! Sorry some of you are starving or dying for no reason! Just don't forget to say thanks!

People starve and die because of human action or human inaction. Humans were not meant to fuck up the world, but they did. Therefore those who realize that it is fucked up are obligated to try to make it a better place than they found it.

I wasn't trying to imply anything about people and their obligations.

Fair. Sometimes God doesn't make sense; just wanted to explain something that I do as part of being Jewish.

Not trying to convert you or anything, if you were afraid of that.

Where's the valid part of this point? That thanking god for being alive is stupid because people are starving to death? Or did you just wanna be dramatic about being an atheist like a tool?

God is a projection of a culture. God is a reflection of us. You can't remove us from the equation when you wanna shit talk God because God is us.
