SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING: November

SENIOR BONDING

Today, you’re all at the mercy of Ms. Lilywhite and a rather less confident Mr. Elmasry. She smiles in a quiet, self-satisfied way as she looks at the assembled pairs.

She explains the scenario: You are all Aurors, and the person you’re assigned with is your partner. A Dark wizard has captured a MACUSA official, and has left a series of clues for you to follow that will lead you to where the official is being held. You have three hours to solve the Dark wizard’s puzzle, or the official will be killed.

Ms. Lilywhite is playing the Dark Wizard, and Mr. Elmasry is the Kidnapped Official.

Everyone is given a tracking card and the same clue to start with, and what results is a complicated scavenger hunt, with riddles and puzzle to solve. Senior pairs must hit the 12 points of the scavenger hunt, where freshmen are waiting with a little stamp for the tracking card, as well as the next clue. If you make it through all 12 points, you will be able to “find” Ms. Lilywhite and Mr. Elmasry (whom she insisted on actually tying to a chair) waiting in the Atrium. Ms. Lilywhite will then duel the “Aurors” (she’s taking it easy on you, don’t worry) and if you defeat her, congratulations! You’ve won!

What have you won? A handful of leftover halloween candy, it looks like. But then Ms. Lilywhite will look at you two with a genuine, if calculating, smile, and say why don’t you two join her for tea and coffee after dinner? She’d love to talk to you about your career goals and future. Have you considered going into law enforcement? She thinks you have what it takes.

THE RULES
  • Students are placed in pairs, you are pretending to be Auror partners on a case.
  • No skipping stages. This leads to automatic disqualification
  • You can try to undermine your competition through misinformation, but you can’t physically interfere with them.
  • We will let you know whether or not your characters reached the final stage to try and save Senator Elmasry. If they do, RNG will determine if they manage to defeat Dark Wizard Lilywhite.
The senior pairings are as follows:

Robin & Rafael
Quinn & Magdalen
Cressida & Asher
Dahlia & Ryan
Ravinder & Penelope
Cecil & Ivy
Ty & Irene Jeremiah & Theresa Zoey & Jesse
Laurel & Isaiah Henrietta & Wilhelmina Iris & Tabitha
Wesley & Diego Beatrix & Nathaniel Levi & Leonardo
Sun-mi & Christopher

We’re getting rid of number scores for the time being. Instead, describe how your character performed with the following:
Character:
Partner:
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?:
What did they do well at?:
What did they struggle with?:

ROBIN & RAFAEL
[info]hanshotfirst
2016-11-25 02:52 pm UTC (link)
Character: Robin Youngblood
Partner: Rafael Ramirez
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Both
What did they do well at?: Robin is ALL KINDS OF ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THIS, which means instead of being a total dick and fucking with Rafael the entire time, he immediately lets Raf take the lead because he clearly likes yelling at people to do things more than Robin does. When it comes to the riddles, he gives outside-the-box (batshit crazy) answers, but he's not stuck on them. He's flexible and willing to try your boring/normal/probably correct ones as long as we're allowed to go try my stupid one after ok. If they make it to dueling, Robin is also pretty good at that. In fact, that's probably when he would be an actual asset to the team. Don't make him look at WORDS, just let him do things.
What did they struggle with?: Robin doesn't ever want to try the most obvious answer, or the easiest answer, and wastes some of their time trying to prove, like, why they CAN'T be talking about that Atrium, because otherwise someone would've just gone there and FOUND them already. He also likes to do things the hard way. Oh, is there a clue in the tree? Robin's already halfway up the tree trying to get to it instead of using, you know, magic. And he's not the best with puzzles. If something takes too long to figure out, he'll get frustrated and want to throw it in the water or something.

DO YOU KNOW HOW INTO THIS ROBIN IS? ROBIN IS SO INTO THIS, and he is taking it serious as FUCK. Congrats Raf, this is probably the first time having Robin as a partner isn't just a death sentence.

Diego & Wes
[info]morale
2016-11-25 02:53 pm UTC (link)
Character: Diego Morales
Partner: Wesley Carpenter
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: No and no.
What did they do well at?: Cooperation? Language skills? Diego's happy to discuss the puzzles and clues, and he's easy to get along with. He's pretty good at riddles, not so great at other kinds of puzzles.
What did they struggle with?: He's not, nor will he ever be, a motivated problem solver. Wes will have to take point otherwise this team is going nowhere fast. He's not terribly interested in winning. Or hurrying. Or anything but having a little fun, honestly. He'll shape up if Wes is into this event, but otherwise he'll need to get lucky.

Dahlia & Ryan
[info]degenerateart
2016-11-25 03:00 pm UTC (link)
Character: Dahlia Hale
Partner: Ryan Hertz
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Nope
What did they do well at?: Dahlia is definitely here for this! And she insists on being Bad Cop or Auror, I GUESS. Even if there is no Good Cop Bad Cop. She loves puzzles and riddles and even though she doesn't insist on being the lead, she can't help but take over from time to time.
What did they struggle with?: Dahlia is so not a DADA or dueling person so she definitely will struggle with trying to beat Ms. Lilywhite. Also, she can't help but laugh at Elmasry tied to a chair.

(Reply to this) (Parent)

NATE & TRIXIE
[info]flyover
2016-11-25 03:04 pm UTC (link)
Character: Nate Bird
Partner: Trixie Armstrong
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Nope & nope. Someone managed to talk him out of taking DADA and saving his brain.
What did they do well at?: Nate can solve a puzzle, no problem. Like, for fun I bet he does those stupid logic puzzles and Rubik's cubes, like a fucking nerd. He's great on a team, though; if Trixie wants to take charge, he's happy to let her, as long as she lets him do what he's good at.
What did they struggle with?: He second guesses the answers a lot, wants to go back and double check them because he'd rather spend a little more time verifying their answers than waste even more time tracking down the wrong lead. Nate is frustratingly slow to work with, sorry Trix. He's also not great at being under pressure, so if they start to run low on time, his problem-solving skills will start to rapidly deteriorate and they'll just go even slower.

Mina & Etta
[info]resentfully
2016-11-25 03:10 pm UTC (link)
Character: Wilhelmina Tran
Partner: Henrietta Gray
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: DADA, although it's one of her tough classes. She's also in Duelling Club, for what it's worth.
What did they do well at?: This isn't really Mina's thing, but she'll take it seriously and be aiming for a respectable showing from her team. NO ONE'S GOING TO SAY MINA TRAN CAN'T DO SOMETHING!!! She's academic-minded, and doesn't mind puzzling over tricky clues and riddles. Mina's more logical than creative, and will be looking for an organized, methodical way of solving this rather than going off intuition.
What did they struggle with?: She gets impatient with other people soooo easily, and is already starting at default of... not quite liking Etta. (Although she doesn't quite hate her either, since she knows Etta looks out for her little sister.) There will be lots of complaining about how much they have to run around campus trying to solve these STUPID CLUES. She wants to be in charge, and can be stubborn about following through her conclusion to the end, even when it's wrong.

Ravi & Penny
[info]paladins
2016-11-25 03:35 pm UTC (link)
Character: Ravinder Dhaliwal
Partner: Penelope Vargas
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: DADA
What did they do well at?: ngl Ravi's already enjoying this because it's like a LARP scenario. :x He likes puzzles and solving problems, and he's patient and cooperative and can stay on task really well. Although if anyone other than Penny looks to Ravi for help, Ravi will smile and deliver straight-faced lies to sabotage their efforts. He's in character, okay.
What did they struggle with?: Ravi's not very competitive and won't push anyone to do stuff they don't want to do, so if Penny's VERY into this, Ravi will be too; but if she's not, he'll just go with the flow and chat with her. He's in Duelling Club, but his wand duelling skills are pretty iffy.

CHRIS AND SUN-MI
[info]doyouevenlift
2016-11-25 03:36 pm UTC (link)
Character: Chris park
Partner: Sun-mi
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Yep and yep
What did they do well at?: Chris is all kinds enthusiastic. Despite his usually aggressive disposition, he's also down to earth and analytical with puzzles and riddles. Chris has done a lot of reading, so most of his ideas are practical and applicable. He's also open to outside ideas from sun/mi. He isn't condescending or demeaning in this process. He's genuinely enthusiastic. Even tho he's never wanted to be an auror.
What did they struggle with?: Chris is just a touch bossy. There are some things he can take a back seat for. It solving puzzles isn't one of them. He's also just a touch impatient. He doesn't appreciate wasting too much time solving the puzzles, especially if the puzzle itself is frustrating.

Character: Tabitha Ogletree
Partner: Iris Shacklebolt
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Nope and Nope.
What did they do well at?: She's a creative person, and thus thinks outside the box quite a bit. She's definitely better at the clues/retrieval side of the task.
What did they struggle with?: The concept. As the daughter of a MACUSA official she thinks this is in EXTREMELY POOR TASTE and this was clearly written on her face throughout the entire task. She also hopes like hell Iris is a better dueller than she is, but at least she can handle defensive spells reasonbaly well (thank you, Dad's bodyguard).

LAUREL & ISAIAH
[info]laaurel
2016-11-25 04:18 pm UTC (link)
Character: Laurel
Partner: Isaiah
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: No & no :S
What did they do well at?: Laurel is very strong with charm work & can make things work on the fly. She'd be pretty decent at figuring out any puzzles in that arena. She has a lot of random trivia knowledge from extensive reading; while she might not be the Ideas Person, she'd have a good chance of being able to fill any gaps when it comes to that sort of thing. :) She's also very positive and energetic and fast on her feet.
What did they struggle with?: Paying attention to small details unless Isaiah reins her in a bit. Laurel would be likely to go OH HEY LET'S DO THIS and push ahead without really thinking too hard if something seems like a good idea/if the pieces fit at first glance. She's a very gut-feeling kind of person and might also have a hard time articulating why she thinks the way she does.

2016-11-25 04:21 pm UTC (link)
Character: Jeremiah Rasmussem
Partner: Tess Noble
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Ras is barely in any classes. This is the guy that literally just sits in a boat on Thursday. You think he would take any of this crap? Oh no, it's too much effort.
What did they do well at?: He's good at bringing sunglasses and a positive attitude. Ras might be slightly good at puzzles but he's not that great. The person is dead unless Tess can get him to think. He's really tall, would that come in handy for something?
What did they struggle with?: Everything. Thinking. He's not so great at thinking. Does any of this involve taffy or sunglasses or a boat? Maybe putting Tess on his shoulders? If not, he's going to be literally useless in this.

Leo & Levi
[info]challenge
2016-11-25 04:22 pm UTC (link)
Character: Leo Fiori
Partner: Levi Kramer
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: DADA but not Occlumency
What did they do well at?: This is the kind of thing he will absolutely work to put his head down and WIN. He likes puzzles and is a very logical problem solver, AND wants to be an Auror,so this is absolutely Leo in full Intense Ebonhide Work Mode. He's also a very competent dueller and in duelling club! IT DEPENDS ON how seriously Levi is also working on this to say how team membery he succeeded in being, but he would try really really hard to remember to not just go ahead with everything alone.
What did they struggle with?: Leo has the tendency to just do whatever is in his head instead of asking opinions. If Levi takes it less than seriously, he will grow steadily more irritated as time goes by and do stuff like not share ideas and try to do things by himself because it's just easier that way. Even if it isn't easier that way, because his weird WORK THROUGH IT tunnel vision doesn't allow fun shortcuts sometimes.

Quinn & Maggie
[info]qnnc
2016-11-25 04:33 pm UTC (link)
Character: Quinn Cunningham
Partner: MagdalenGillis
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: DADA.
What did they do well at?: Do you want Quinn to run from point A to point B really fast? She'll do that.

Quinn is a selectively good problem solver — she's quick and efficient if the tools are in front of her. "Here's a thing, find a way to use it to fix the other thing," for example, is something that she would do well. She can absorb information and recognize the patterns within, thanks to hundreds of hours of studying. She'll let Maggie take the reins if the other girl wants them (no, seriously, TAKE THEM) and won't push for control.

What did they struggle with?: If you give Quinn a room of potential fixes, her success is... questionable. She falters at demands to think creativity and fails to think outside of the box on most occasions.

Mandatory bonding activities that don't involve eating or sports make Quinn grumpy. She's not going to take initiative, and Maggie will never see Quinn suddenly insist GO GO LET'S DO THE THING. Her heart needs to be in the activity for her to be an efficient problem-solver, and her heart is so far away that it might as well be in Thailand. She should be in the library, working. Ugh. If Maggie asks Quinn what they should do next, Quinn will shrug and stubbornly say "I dunno, whatever." If Maggie wants to succeed, the best course of action is to hand Quinn thing A and thing B and tell her that they can get back to the library if she can figure out how they work together. No guaranteed results, though.

CRICKET & ASHER
[info]guthriegazette
2016-11-25 06:21 pm UTC (link)
Character: Asher Guthrie
Partner: Cressida Quayle
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Neither
What did they do well at?: Asher is highly alert, especially to minute details. Plus, having essentially a photographic memory doesn't hurt when keeping clues straight and pulling up a pile of useless information he's shoved into his head at various points in his life. He's good at researching and does quite a bit of it, along with reading, so it's not a hard stretch to think that he'd be pretty good at solving riddles and puzzles. Plus, he's focused and while not aggressively competitive he does put effort in; he'll commando crawl through mud if he has to to give them a chance at winning. He'll take anything anyone else tells them with a grain of salt, so he won't be easy to lead astray.
What did they struggle with?: What is duel, how is duel?! Without DADA or Occlumency, he's not exactly primed to be any sort of fake Auror. He's smart and capable so tactics aren't a problem, but that will only go so far in a duel. There's no way in hell he'd try to undermine any other team either, so that could potentially put them at a disadvantage.

Character: Z
Partner: Jesse
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Neither
What did they do well at?: Zoey is an all around good student and has a strong background and base of knowledge in a lot of subject areas. I wouldn't call her an encyclopedia exactly, but she knows a lot of stuff and has good recall. She's also quite logical and methodical and used to being patient and working hard to reach goals, etc -- a good planner, in general, with decent follow-through.
What did they struggle with?: Z's not as enthusiastic about the activity in general -- there's a reason she's not in DADA, being a bit of a pacifist. She might need to feed off of Jesse's energy/enthusiasm, and if he's not as into the whole thing either they might end up getting distracted, etc. :s oops

Character: Ty Hawkeswood
Partner: Irene Lovelace
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Nope and nope!
What did they do well at?: Ty is quite adept with languages and ciphers and he knows a good deal about magical history and literature, so he may actually be useful when it comes to the riddles. Apart from that, he brings little to the table apart from a cooperative can-do attitude. While he'll try, he won't take the exercise particularly seriously.
What did they struggle with?: Ty is too impulsive, too impatient, and not overly observant, all of which will limit his usefulness. Additionally, he's a mediocre wizard and a fellow without much competitive spirit or a single violent bone in his body. If they make it to the dueling stage...he'll be useless but encouraging?

Ivy & Cecil

Character: Cecil Honeychurch
Partner: Ivy Templeton
Are they in DADA or Occlumency?: Neither
What did they do well at?: Cecil is patient, level-headed, and able to work through the riddles and puzzles in a logical way...though he may not be that quick about it. He'll also be a cooperative and supportive partner and potentially a calming influence.
What did they struggle with?: Cecil always does his best, but he doesn't know anything about Defense Against the Dark Arts or dueling and will be useless if they manage to make it to the last part of the challenge. He'll be inclined to play second fiddle in a challenge like this one unless Ivy is equally resistant.

Ferris will spend the day watching this insanity, cutting up her apple and pointing in various directions knowing absolutely nothing at all and if anyone even begins to think that she is actually helping, they are the gullible ones. She isn't going to help solve puzzles, give out answers but really just sit there and pretend she knows anything. Trust me, she isn't going to be of any use.
