"No?" Again Adrian's expression remained playful, cheerful even though his insides were in knots. He didn't know if he dared to hear the hope in her tone. Surely, it was something he'd imagined out of sheer desperation. Surely, she didn't want what she was saying to be untrue.
The truth was that he did want more and badly. He wanted to tell her he'd been a wreck when she'd left. He wanted to tell her that he'd missed her. He wanted to press his lips to hers and show her how much more he did want.
"I've heard that line before," he teased her instead, referring to the countless times that one of the other had insisted things weren't going to go beyond a dance or a touch or a kiss. No matter how much they denied it, though, it always escalated past that. It was as though they weren't in control of their own wills when they were close to one another. A large part of Adrian hoped that hadn't changed.
