Her head was swimming as she regained consciousness, and she decided immediately that opening her eyes would be a bad idea. She concentrated on her breathing until the pounding ceased a small bit. Around her she could hear frantic whispers that made no sense. Touched the veil, one man was saying, voice insistent. ...spell rebounded, a woman argued. ...doesn't...mistake...St. Mungo's, a second man said, and then she was floating, the sudden movement sending pain through her body and then everything went black a second time. The next time she woke, she was in bed. She cracked one eye open, but nothing looked familiar. The walls were white, and woman in a white gown and nurse's hat was straightening the blankets. She was in a hospital? That didn't make sense. The last thing she remembered was...was...nothing. Frantically she searched her memories, but nothing was there. She had no idea who she was or what she had been doing previous to waking up in a hospital bed. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she made herself breathe deeply. Her head pounded, and she was suddenly aware that her entire body felt like it had been trampled on by a herd of elephants. You're fine. You can move your limbs. You remember what an elephant is. Memories are always fuzzy after a head injury. She kept repeating these facts to herself, and slowly her pulse calmed. She would figure out what else she remembered, but first she had to sit up. It was slow going, but finally she managed to lever herself into a sitting position. She leaned against the pillows and breathed heavily. The simple act of sitting up shouldn't have exhausted her so deeply, but as long as she didn't have to move again for a while she thought she'd be fine. She just wished she knew her name. |
