Heero blinked open his eyes when he realized the sun shone down in such a direct manner that his bedroom normally didn’t allow. He squinted for a second and tried to parse the sounds and the fact that the sun was right in his face. It should not have been possible; he’d been in his bed the night before. His security measures—what others called ‘overkill’ but Heero felt entirely justified in—would have prevented the average burglar from getting in.
Those same security measures would also prevent any old Oz agent with a grudge from getting in too.
They also would have kept Duo safe if he'd just listened. Maybe, or maybe not considering this was not his bedroom which he was certain he'd fallen asleep in.
Obviously someone got around those same security measures, Heero deduced, because that was definitely the sun and that was definitely a lake, and that was definitely some weird dark shade that didn’t make any sense, and that was an egg-shaped thing hatching right next to him. Whatever the egg was it was larger than any bird or reptile Heero knew of—just as the sun was just that slight difference from the one he remembered, and the temperature for the season Heero knew it to be completely wrong.
Peace was getting to him, he decided. In the Eve Wars it never took him as many seconds as it’s taken him now to put together a situation. He breathed out through his nose and sat up—that was a tablet next to his hand; perfect, communication—just in time for the egg to fully hatch into a white-and-tawny colored wolf pup. Heero stared into the bright blue eyes of the pup and peripherally noted the wings upon its back with a sort of what the fuck and Quatre is going to kill whoever is manipulating genetics again series of thoughts.
The wolf pup stared back with equal measure. Neither blinked for a moment. Then:
I’m hungry.
Well. That wouldn’t do.
Heero reached over, grabbed the tablet he saw as he sat up, and went to quick work. He could figure out the why’s after he got the pup—Zero—some food. Somehow.
