Nothing like hunger to really change a person's sunny personality into downright cruel and nasty.
Swan knew how it was to go without food. There had been a few times when he'd gone abroad where there had been days before he'd had an actual meal. And before that, when it was just him on the streets? He'd gone months without real food. So he was no stranger to going without and had been able to train himself to ignore the stomach pains. But he could also understand that not everyone was like that. Life had been too cushy for most of the people in their group. At least, pretty cushy by his standards.
And nearly everything was cushy compared to that piece of shit hole in the wall he'd had to live in growing up.
Really, this new life was working out pretty well for him. It was nice not having to worry about the law or rules being governed over him. If he wanted something, he took it. Sure, he didn't keep everything for himself and shared with everyone but it was also pretty sweet having the luxury of getting first dibs. Sometimes he wondered if he'd gone through all that horseshit just so he could do so well in the future apocalypse.
Because honestly, he didn't want to go back. Fuck civilization.
Running water would be nice though.
At least he was able to get along with people. Spencer was handy as a partner and Swan appreciated his quickness. As far as being chummy, well. Spencer was quick on his feet and didn't dilly-dally. He wasn't much for conversation but hell, this wasn't a trip to the mall. It wasn't like they were besties, though Swan could see himself liking Spencer, in spite of ... well, things. At least they were talking.
Spencer started climbing further up the building, their goal to hit the roof and Swan was quick to follow. "Don't have to tell me twice," he said as he shouldered his backpack and hoisted himself right next to him. "We might have to try distracting them or something, just to get 'em off us."
