The trophy was small, but the trip and the experience had been larger than life. Mr. Schue didn’t regret a thing about their trip to New York. Well, almost. Emma had been almost disappointed with his decision to stay with the Glee Club, and come back to Ohio, without staying on at the “Rhodes” show. They had had a long talk when he arrived back in Lima, and though it was still his dream, he couldn’t bear to part with the kids who had made him believe in dreams again. They needed him. He needed them. And watching them celebrate their small trophy, 12th place, with laughs and cheers and congratulatory claps on shoulders and hugs, his pride in them and their progress not only vocally, but as a team, was made tenfold. Broadway would still be there. These kids were one year closer to graduating and they wouldn’t be here forever.
When he did get them to settle down for one last heart to heart, he had tears shining in his eyes.
“Guys, Guys,” he laughed, shaking his head as they found their seats. “You have been so amazing this year. Last year was great, but this year… wow. I really am proud of each and every one of you. You’re all going to do big things in your futures.” He gave them all a tender, fatherly look, and then clapped his hands, rubbing them together, “Now! I know this is the last Glee Club meeting of the year, but I have one last assignment for you.” The button Sue had given him was in his pocket. He wouldn’t be surprised if some of them had already heard.
