The Morning After [Heidi, Nathan, Post-Op]
Peter was able to hear the improvement in Nathan's heart once the circulation had been restored. There had been a few tense moments when the heartbeat had struggled to level out, and a faint electrical buzzing through Peter's skin left his and Heidi's hair standing on end through their clasped hands. But once the steady, strong pulse had pulled through, he'd relaxed, tension seeping from his body nearly before the head surgeon could glance back with an encouraging nod.
Once Nathan was closed up, and was resting peacefully, Peter pulled Heidi into a tight hug. They'd held onto one another's hands throughout the ordeal, Peter feeding off her quiet strength and resolve and doing his very best to be a pillar of support for her. Now, he could relax. Nathan was going to be fine.
"You want me to take first watch," he asked her, a weary smile tugging at the edge of his lips, "or should I go home, update the boys, and sleep in a real bed while you toss and turn in a mangy, canvas cot in the recovery room?"
"You can tuck Adam and the boys in for me." Heidi replied, giving him another squeeze for good measure, and dropping kisses on both of his cheeks meant for both him and the boys. "And what makes you so sure I'll be the one on the cot? Nathan's just had himself a nice, lengthy nap. He can sit and watch me sleep for a while."
Peter let himself laugh at that, feeling the last of his apprehension chip away. "I'll bring you a cinnamon bun and some tea in a few hours," he told her, giving her a kiss on the cheek in return. "If you need me at all..." He trailed off, leaning his forehead lightly against hers. Just shout.
She watched Peter relax, and the laugh earned him a smile and another squeeze. "You are the best brother a girl could wish for." She told him, and was surprised to find that, when his voice reverberated inside her mind, she still wasn't really surprised at all. "There's lasagna in the fridge. Heat some up and get something in all of your stomachs--I doubt the boys have really eaten."
Peter nodded slowly. "Reheat lasagna. I can manage that. Who knows? I might even manage to sleep a while." He stepped back, gave Angela a brief but tight embrace, and then turned towards the door, fading out of sight before he reached it, teleporting back home outside the range of the observation room cameras. Adam had been expecting the good news, clearly having been encouraged by the feelings of relief Peter had felt. The boys still seemed a bit worried, but after some assurances from Uncle Peter and a plate of hot lasagna in their bellies, all four males were ready to tuck into bed.
It was four hours later that Peter roused. He was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed that much. Despite his impatience to check in on the hospital, a shower was first on the to-do list, followed by a set of fresh clothing and a pot of coffee. He still teleported back, though he stopped first at his favorite cafe to pick up not one, but two still-warm cinnamon buns, a tall mug of Earl Grey, and a basket of fresh bagels. The last was dropped off, as usual, at the nursing station, and Peter made his way to Nathan's room, knocking lightly at the door before entering and presenting Heidi with her breakfast.
