Toby thought he was playing it off really well, being alright after his mom passed away. And really, he was doing better than anyone could have expected. He'd known about Ariella's illness just long enough to get used to it, but not long enough to get his hopes up. As soon as he found out, he'd know it was useless. They were going to lose her.
He'd probably never get used to her being gone. She might not have been his birth mother, but she was the only mother he'd ever known. He missed her. Even the thought of her nagging made him a little sad. It was a smart idea on Scott's part, having Toby start school at JFKHS right after winter break. It's where most of his friends were, and more importantly it was where Sarah was. They'd all been like rocks for him to cling to, and being able to be around them and just be a kid for once had been the best medicine.
But every now and then he just needed to be by himself--or almost by himself--and not have to think about it, necessarily, but just sort of allow himself to be down and out. Let's face it. The boy had just lost his mother. Did everyone expect him to be in a good mood all the time?
So, he'd given Dale a call. Dale had been through a lot of shit himself lately, and it was just good to have a friend who sort of wanted to just look at the pond and throw rocks in it with you. He'd already headed down to the pond. It had thawed out enough for their particular activity and was looking around for some good skipping stones while he waited for his friend.
