Who: Sumi and Dawn
What: Lunch
When: Thursday around noon
Where: Chelsea Hotel
Rating: probably low
Notes: Under 250 words challenge

Sumi had been out shopping ever since she got out of class. She had finished just about all of her gift shopping. All she had left were a few gifts for the Angel Tree children, but the cold was really starting to get to her. The snow made things look beautiful, but she could only stay out in it for so long. She was also feeling a bit peckish, so she had begun searching for a place to eat. This was when she noticed the hotel that the girl, Dawn, had mentioned. Sumi figured it was as warm a place as any, and who knows, she may even meet someone nice there too.

When she entered the hotel, she shook a bit of the snow off her long mist grey coat so she would look a little less disheveled. She straightened her matching knitted hat, and began looking around. The restaurant was just to the side of the entrance, so she began making her way to it when she saw the girl who Sumi had met on the forum. She smiled at the girl and waved with her free hand. She wasn't sure if the girl was working or not, so she chose not to bother her with more than a wave. She was also a rather gorgeous girl, so Sumi felt a little nervous about talking to her first.

Dawn was on her post, keying in data and fielding requests. While they had reduced her hours, they were not quick to let her go. Though she was not fluent enough in foreign languages to be promoted to the concierge desk, she knew enough to help out travelers. When traveling the world as often as she could get away with, Dawn had made it a goal to at least know basics. She was just finishing up such a call in French when she heard the automatic doors open up in the lobby. Out of habit, her head first snapped up to see who was entering, then scanned the floor to see if assistance was needed or headed their way.

Seeing instead a familiar face from the site she visited when she ran out of work to do, Dawn smiled and motioned that she'd be a moment. Simultaneously, she told the Parisian that a ticket was made and maintenance would be upstairs shortly. Once the phone was on it's hook, Dawn unpinned her nametag from her button-down blouse, calling over her shoulder. "Kath, going to lunch."

Dawn stepped out from behind the station to meet up with Sumi. "I'm glad you decided to come this way!" Never one to be awkward about personal space, Dawn hooked her arm through Sumi's and began to walk. "Our chef, Claude, is totally insane and a pyro but the man is a genius."

Once Dawn had taken Sumi by the arm, she began feeling more comfortable with everything. It wasn't that she was shy or anything. Quite the opposite in fact. She mainly was just wanting to be careful not to assume anything. The slight nerve issue was resolved the moment Dawn had come over and hooked her arm.

Sumi offered a smile. "Couldn't think of a nicer place to come and warm up," she told the friendly girl, "And getting the chance to meet you in person was a definite selling point." She walked along with Dawn to the restaurant taking in the beautiful scene that the hotel provided. She giggled a bit at Dawn's description of the chef. "Mad geniuses tend to make the best things," she just hoped that not all the things he made contained meat. "What is his specialty?" she asked as they entered the restaurant area. She peered at the menu that stood on the host area, and felt pleased that she did see a few items listed as vegetarian.

"His specialty is fusion; he does American BBQ, Italian, Mexican and Asian style dishes," Dawn detailed, canting her head to the side and briefly closing her eyes as she made a mental picture of the menu instead of reaching for one. "I always recommend the soup of the day, he's always concocting something new."

One of Ambers that worked the lunch shift walked up to great them. Luckily for them, it was the nicest one of the lot.

"Warning, the Dragon's in a mood today," the waitress conspired to Dawn before gathering two menus before addressing Sumi with her most professional smile.

Dawn shrugged off the warning. "Just have him bring out the soups, we'll set him round." Lightly nudging Sumi, she whispered. "He's only a dragon to the waitstaff, he loves showing off to guests. Especially cute ones."

Soup sounded wonderful at the moment. Sumi could almost imagine the warmth it would bring, so she gave a smile and a nod when Dawn told the waitress to get this mad genius to bring out his latest creation. "Soup from a dragon," Sumi said, smile still in place, "Sounds like a fairy tale of some kind."

Sumi set her bags down next to the table, and she then proceeded to search through one of them for a moment. She retrieved one of the gifts she had purchased for a just in case present. She always bought a few of these on the off chance that she forgot someone, or made a new friend. In this case, it was a little necklace with a crescent moon pendant on it. It hadn't cost much, but Sumi thought it looked very nice. The necklace was in a little black box, which she handed over to Dawn. "I know we just met, but I tend to buy presents for everyone," Sumi told the girl.

"The dragon's soups are indeed magical," she chuckled, knowing that by the way Dawn and the waitress were talking about Claude, one might imagine a monstrous troll skulking out from the kitchen. She knew, however, that the chef was fiendishly charming when he wanted to. Dawn was about to tell Sumi that fact once they were seated, yet that was forgotten the moment the gift was presented.

"Oh Sumi, you really didn't have to! Thank you," Dawn gushed before taking the box. "Lunch is on me, then."

"Is it okay if I wait until Christmas to open it? I want to put this under my tree." The pre-lit tree she bought for the corner of her apartment was no taller than a few feet, the paper tissue wrapped gifts underneath it so far were all intended for others.

"Don't really have to give anyone gifts," Sumi replied with a smile, "I just love doing it!" Buying gifts for people was one of Sumi's ways of making sure she didn't get depressed, so she bought stuff for everyone. She loved seeing people happy.

"Of course you can take it home," she told the girl, "Just make sure to send me a picture when you open it."

"What are you up to for Christmas?" Sumi asked, after requesting some hot tea to aid in the warming up process.

"I'm a giver, it's more fun than actually getting presents," Dawn admitted, giving the small gift a hug before setting it beside her appetizer plate to glance at it. On top of getting the enjoyment of seeing others happy at her expense, but she knew how difficult she was to find gifts for. "I'll take a picture, promise."

She hummed a bit at the question, pausing to take a sip of her water before answering. "I imagine I'll probably have a shift at one of my jobs. Seems like I'm never not working. But every year I make a santa's helper style outfit and pass out gifts to my co-workers and friends. Mostly I bundle up and enjoy the lights. You?"

"That's nice of you," Sumi said after Dawn explained what she did for her co-workers. Her mind also vaguely wandered to the image of Dawn in a Santa's helper outfit. Though she had the feeling that, like all the other cute girls Sumi had met, Dawn probably only liked guys, so she did her best to push any thoughts of being more than friends away. She didn't want to ruin a friendship before it fully began after all.

"My parents are coming into town," she told Dawn, "So I'll probably be taking them out to see the sights and stuff." She then began pondering, "They might be staying here actually," she told the girl, "So I might be coming by again soon."

"Really? What are their names?" Dawn asked, then explained with a conspiratorial wink, "If they're already reserved in the database, I can probably move them up for an upgrade."

A tall, lanky man in an apron and backwards cap lumbered with a hurried gait, nearly slamming the bowls down once he reached the table. Catching sight of Dawn and his guest, he stopped and set them down properly. "They should've said." Claude noted, his accent thick. "Your guest is sister, no?"

"Just a friend," she beamed up at him before motioning across the table at Sumi. "Sumi. Claude. Claude, Sumi."

"Easy mistake. Two beautiful ladies," Claude chuckled before making his official presentation. "Today's soup is eggplant with miso base. I shall bring out appetizer. Okay?"

Dawn nodded, then asked Sumi before the chef walked away. "Is there anything that you can't eat? He is a maestro at substitutions."

"You can do that?" Sumi asked feeling rather impressed, "Their names are Brandon and Lilly Edwards." For Dawn to do such a thing for someone she just met, Sumi couldn't help but feel that this girl was one of the nicest people she had met in New York.

When Claude came out, the dramatic change that occurred instantly after seeing who he was serving amused Sumi a little. She blushed at the compliment, "It's nice to meet you Claude," she told him with a smile. The scent of the soup caught Sumi's nose, "The soup smells wonderful."

"I try to stay away from meat, actually," Sumi answered, "That's not a problem is it?"

"Oh yeah, it's not that much trouble." Dawn grinned, then explained. We overbook reservations since there's almost always rooms that get canceled last minute. It's not a loss to the hotel to move travelers up, though it's usually for people who come in on red-eyes."

Dawn clapped her hands softly, moreso for the soup of the day than Claude polished spiel. "My favorite, how'd you know?"

"Must be psychic, Miss Miller." Claude commented with a wink.

Dawn mouthed 'lies' to Sumi, then giggled when the thermokinetic chef lightly nudged her shoulder. At the question on whether not cooking meat would be a problem, and Claude could not help but scoff at the idea of having any trouble. "My vegetarian is the best in New York. I will show you."

Dawn covered her mouth until Claude retreated back into the kitchen, shaking her head at him. "He isn't lying, he is really good."

Sumi grinned, "Thanks," she told Dawn for the kind offer to upgrade her parents room. It would definitely be a nice Christmas surprise for them.

Sumi smiled sweetly at Claude, "In that case, I can't wait to try whatever you make." It was always nice when she didn't have to explain her choice. In this situation, she was even more grateful that the chef seemed to be keen to show off how good his dishes were. The best vegetarian cooking in town seemed promising. "Thank you, Claude."

"He's not as bad as the other girl made him out to be," Sumi commented, "I like this dragon of yours." She giggled softly, "If he really makes the best vegetarian dishes in town, I'm probably going to start coming here a lot."
