Who: Caleb & Alice
What: Where else would Caleb go?
When: backdated Saturday (because I also fail at life) right after this
Rating: Medium

When Caleb ran from the hospital he had no idea where he was going, all he knew is he wanted to get away from that room. He wanted to run away from what happened, he knew it was stupid but part of him hoped that if he ran fast enough and ran far enough it wouldn't have happened. Adrian wouldn't have jumped and played hero like he did. Sure he knew that meant that he'd be in his partner's position but at that moment he would trade their places without a thought. They made that weapon to kill him...he should be the one paying the price...not Adrian...not Josie...not their kids...him...just him. He stopped running as he did a half wheeze and scrunched his eyes up trying not to cry. When he glanced at the building he had stopped in front of it made perfect sense of why he stopped. It was Alice's building...his baby sister. She always knew how to make everything better. She'd make this better...or at least better than it currently was.

Caleb had been to Alice's current apartment once...he brought her flowers as an apology for something he did...he didn't remember what for. It was also a celebration of his ankle monitor being removed. But even though her apartment wasn't mapped out in his mind he was practically on auto pilot to her door. He did three quick knocks, he wanted to see her, have that "little sister, everything is gonna be okay" vibe of her's to wash over him. His whole mind was cracking apart and he knew Alice was the only one who could help him hold it together.

Alice had been in a pretty damn good mood these days. She had finally worked up the courage to tell Bradley about the fact that she was a mutant only to find out that he had two siblings with powers of their own, though they had been bought. She still wasn't sure how she was supposed to feel about that, but she had let it go to focus on the fact that this hadn't been a repeat of Rob. Things had worked out. For once.

She had been in such a good mood that she bought herself a small bouquet of flowers and was in the process of neatly arranging them on her table when the knock came. She hadn't been expecting anyone, but she opened the door with a cheerful smile.

Which immediately fell. "What's wrong?" she blurted out tactlessly (as per usual).

Caleb didn't really think much on how his appearance must look. The dried blood on his hands, the blood on his clothes and the blood streaking in his hair...there was just a lot of blood. However, it dawned on him as he glanced down at his hands absolutely horrified. He met Alice's eyes again and did that strange squinty eyes, heavy breathing thing that guys do when they are trying to not cry. It was a reflex...he just didn't cry...it wasn't in his way. In a broken voice he managed to say,

"Can I come in?" He paused, "don't worry...it's not mine."

It's not mine.

Alice wasn't sure if she was supposed to be relieved or not by that comment. Sure, it meant he wasn't bleeding out, but it suggested that someone else had, possibly at his own hands. That thought process had a surge of panic rising within her that she refused to let take physical form. He wouldn't have done anything with Hellfire again. He wouldn't have. This was unrelated. Keep breathing.

"Uh. Yeah. Come in the bathroom. We can get you washed up. Bradley left some pajamas over here you can wear if you want to change or something?"

Caleb didn't fully realize that his words about the blood might not being his could possibly look bad. When one is covered in blood that isn't his, one might think he killed someone. But he just let his sister guide him into her apartment and towards the bathroom. He started to wheeze and clenched his eyes shut as he braced himself against the sink,

"Al...Adrian...there was so much blood...I tried," he placed on of his hands over the other as he remembered trying to stop the bleeding and the dark blood running through his fingers and over his hands, "It was supposed to be me...it was meant for me. He shouldn't...I..." he sunk to his knees and despite his best effort a single tear snuck out and made it's way down his cheek.

All the blood was starting to make Alice feel a little queasy. He reeked of it as he walked through her house, and it wasn't exactly a small amount all over him either.

"Caleb." Alice was not meant for this kind of thing. She didn't know what she was supposed to do in a crisis (namely her brother covered in someone else's blood looking like he was about to have a complete breakdown). She wasn't good at making split-second decisions and making everything better all of a sudden. She let other people do those kinds of things!

"Caleb, it's going to be fine," she said in what she hoped was a reassuring voice. "Look. First. Get out of this stuff. It's not helping to look at it. Here." And she wasn't going to be much good to him if she felt like she was going to hurl from the smell. She turned on the shower as she tried to piece together what had happened. Something about Adrian, his partner. Which meant this stupid job of his had gotten him in trouble just like she'd thought it would- but this wasn't the time for that. Had his partner gotten hurt?

Caleb turned to look at the shower when she turned the water on. Getting cleaned up did sound good, however, he knew the smell of the blood would be permanently ingrained in his mind. It was Adrian's blood, his partner's blood...his partner who could be dead at that very moment. An image of Josie and the kids all dressed in blood crying over a closed coffin flashed into his mind and he shuddered. He had promised to watch over them and what did he do...he ran away.

Caleb turned to look at Alice and nodded. He managed to croak out, "Okay..." He rinsed his hands off in the sink first and had to look away from the pink water circle the drain. Once they were cleaned he peeled off his leather jacket and blood stained white t-shirt. It had smears of blood all over them from when Adrian had grabbed it when he made him promise to watch over his wife and kids if he didn't make it. The clothes he was wearing today he knew would be thrown away...even if they managed to get the blood out he'd never be able to wear it again. He grasped his shirt in his hands and his face screwed into an almost sob again. He made a slight choking noise as he took in a shaky breath. He let it drop next to his jacket as he brought a hand to his face then he turned to Alice. He wrapped his arms around her and buried his face in her shoulder.

"It was meant for me Al...I should be the one there not him...not Adrian. He has a wife, kids, I should be the one dying...not him."
