Sarah hadn't had the chance to be alone with Toby since he had broken the news about his mother. She didn't know what she was supposed to say in this kind of situation. "I'm sorry" just didn't seem to be quite enough, and she was sure he was getting awfully tired of hearing it. "It'll be okay" wasn't exactly fair game either, since Sarah knew nothing of his mother's prognosis, and she didn't want to say such a thing if it was looking like it wasn't going to be.
And on top of all that, Sarah knew that his mother disapproved of their dating. Maybe it was egotistical to drag her name into things, but Sarah was sure that it wasn't easy going against his mother's wishes by dating her when she was so ill. Nobody wants to upset someone with cancer.
Frowning at herself in the mirror for letting her thoughts get so negative, Sarah tugged the t-shirt she was wearing to bed over her head and slid into her pajama bottoms. The lights were already out as she headed over to Toby and eased down next to him with a small smile. "Hey."
