SUBJECT: You wanted information? Well, you're gonna get information!
Hi Wesley Clarke,

I was told you were inquiring about the university and am here to offer my assistance/wisdom/insight. You'd think they could just send you a packet, but, hey, I'm happy to help, and cheaper than a tree and printing.

I'm not exactly sure what you want to know yet, but I'll tell you a little about myself anyway. As you can tell from where it says my name up there, that's my name: Ariel Silverman-Lim. I'm a sophomore now, attending Tisch, focusing on musical theater and generally being badass. (Hopefully my colorful language isn't offensive. I assume you're older than 10, so I'm rolling with it.) I came here to the City from California, but I know you're a native (go, John F. Kennedy! You were pretty cool until you died), so your experience will be different than mine. If you were a fellow Californian, or West Coaster at least, I would warn you about the assholes that walk the streets of New York masquerading as people (especially in Manhattan) and the rain and cold and the people that spit when you walk by them (especially in Brooklyn). But you already know all of that.

So, I'll stop there and open up the floor to you, Wesley Clarke - what is it you'd like to know? How the caf food is? What number will I be singing this coming Friday at open mic night down at Jot? Ask and you shall receive.

Best,

Ariel

Ariel-

Your assumption was right. I am older than 10. And I don't really give a shit about cursing. I'm in high school, so I probably use my fair share of 'bad language' on a daily basis.

I'm not really sure what I'd like to know. Should I tell you about myself and then you can go from there? I'm 18 years old, so I'm about a year older than everyone in my class. It blows but I'm sort of the type of guy that people don't mess with, so it doesn't matter.

I'm the quarterback for the football team here. Is the football team at NYU any good? Do you have a football team?

And yeah, I guess I'd like to know how the food is. And what it's like being a roommate.

Hi QB Wes,

I'm glad you're older than 10. That is heartening news. Congratulations on the daily use of words like 'fuck' and 'ass.' You're almost a real adult. Just start incorporating 'goddamn,' 'bastard,' and 'dog-fucker,' and you'll get there. I just know it.

Football? Really? Well, it's nice to meet you electronically. I'll be honest with you though - I'm the opposite of a football player, minus the awesome athleticism and grace. Do you understand what musical theater mea And I know nothing about football. But, for you, I will look into this - so I'll back with you on that count. I hope that's alright.

I am expert enough on the other two questions to answer them without wiki searching. - First, the food is actually pretty okay, but I was raised on cafeteria food, so... But really, they have all kinds of options - for vegetarians, vegans, omnivores, carnivores, the two people still on Atkins, the whole lot. Second, being a roommate is also something I rather grew up with, but suffice it to say it can be a difficult adjustment. Depending on what school you apply for, some administer compatibility tests in an attempt to avoid the drama that so often befalls freshman dorms. But more likely, you'll just be lumped with someone and will have to hope for the best. My sage advice would be to communicate openly - be it in song, haiku, a movement piece, spoken word, surrealist art, what have you, so long as they can understand it.

Did you want information on any of the colleges or programs? I could win a Jeopardy episode with the stupid facts I know.

Best,
Not a football player,
Ariel

Athletic and Graceful Ariel? This's weird-

Dog fucker is a new one. I'll add it to my repertoire.

I don't really need you to go out of your way to look up anything on football. As long as there's a team that doesn't royally suck dick, then I'm down to play on it. If I even make it. I'm told I'm pretty good, and our teams at school are ranked pretty high up there, but I'm only as good as the people around me.

I don't mind cafeteria food. And I have a sister so I doubt the roommate thing would be a problem.

What are the guys girls like on campus?

I have no idea what my major will be yet. So no. No information on programs. Except maybe what's yours like?

Wes

Just Ariel's Okay, Wes,

Well, I have a bit of bad news for you. Our team doesn't suck dick, because it sucks nothing at all. We don't have a varsity team. But, we do have intramural touch football. And, on the plus side, our team... mascot, apparently, is called the NYU Violet and is a cat, I think. A minor victory.

They seem to be very similar to most girls I've met in other places. Hair, curves, all of it. I hear some of them even carry purses, but I can't confirm that.

Mine is very musical and very theatrical. It's not a huge program, so we spend a lot of time together, which is what I prefer over large and anonymous, anyway. The academics are, of course, rigorous and I have very little time to eat, but overall, I rather love it. Are you interested in acting or singing at all? You're welcome to drop by for a visit!

NYU Violets 4 lyfe,
Ariel

Just Ariel-

Oh. I suppose I can get down to play on an intramural touch football team. Do you play? Is anyone any good? Does intramural mean just anyone can do it?

I'm not really sure how violets and cats are similar. Wouldn't the mascot just be a giant flower?

What are the uh guys like?

I like to act, I guess. I'm pretty good at pretending to be things I'm not.

Wes

Shrinking Violet,

Get do I don't play. I don't even really know what a football looks like, besides pigskin. But, from what I read, it seems they're pretty good - whatever that means. There are a lot of other intramural sports, as well. I think our varsity basketball team is Div III, however. (Whatever that means.)

It's a cat with a purple color. Don't question it.

The guys vary. They too seem to be a good sample of what's out there in the world, except younger and more attractive, if douchier.

Okay! You should definitely come by. My dramatic theater class is putting together a small performance for next week on Thursday. You should pop in!

Do we really need to be signing this,
Ariel

Purple Cat-

Football is pretty easy. Especially touch football. If you're as graceful as you claim, I'm sure you'd be great at it.

I question it.

Are they tolerant? Are any of them like, openly gay?

I'll try and stop by.

No.

West,

Stop flattering me.

Don't.

Well, yes to both. There are plenty of us gays walking around, mingling with the straights, bis, and pans. It's like one of those wildlife shows where you see all the animals drinking from the same watering hole, but I imagine it smells better here.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Yes,
Violet

Yoda-

No.

Alright.

I hope I didn't offend you. I'm just wondering because...well, I'm not friends with very many tolerant people. My parents and family are very religious, and it seems like most people I run in circles with at school are homophobic. I'm sure there's more than I know who aren't all assholes about it, but I'm too afraid to tell anyone for fear of what they might do. I've even got a girlfriend. And I'll delete these emails immediately after I send them, just to make sure no one reads it. I'm a pussy, I know. But I guess it's good to know it will get easier.

Alright, I will then.

Go West, Young Man,

Okay. I'll accept more flattery then.

You didn't offend me and you're not a pussy. I'm sorry to hear about your family and friends. That makes it all that much more difficult, I know. If it helps, there are plenty of resources on campus for those of us Rainbow Brite kids, and, - and I mean this, if you ever want to talk to someone about anything, I'd be more than happy to lend an ear or two. Or, if that makes you feel too uncomfortable, just try to remember that you're not alone.
