The Ask Hallie column was supposed to calm him down. It was supposed to make him feel better about his doubts. It was supposed to do a lot of things. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything except make him feel hollow. His family was not the kind of family to stand behind him in a situation like this. He certainly knew he had no friends who would 'have his back' if the time came for him to... come out. No. The only person who he wasn't really positive of her reaction was his sister. It was time to test the waters, as Hallie had put it. Maybe make some hypothetical inquiries.
But what could he say? "Suppose I'm gay, what would you do?" That didn't seem very tactful. And he'd know immediately from her face what she was thinking, since she wasn't really the kind of person who was good at subtlety. That's actually what he was worried about the most: her face. What if she looked disgusted? What if she looked like she wanted to throw up? What if she DID throw up?
Okay, so he was being dramatic. She wasn't going to throw up. But she could be disappointed in him. She could tell their parents. He had to be careful.
"Sarah?" He knocked on her door. He knew she was home.
