Who: Wes and Sarah
What: sibling talk
When: tonight, I suppose
Where: their house?
Rated: tbd, but probably low

The Ask Hallie column was supposed to calm him down. It was supposed to make him feel better about his doubts. It was supposed to do a lot of things. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything except make him feel hollow. His family was not the kind of family to stand behind him in a situation like this. He certainly knew he had no friends who would 'have his back' if the time came for him to... come out. No. The only person who he wasn't really positive of her reaction was his sister. It was time to test the waters, as Hallie had put it. Maybe make some hypothetical inquiries.

But what could he say? "Suppose I'm gay, what would you do?" That didn't seem very tactful. And he'd know immediately from her face what she was thinking, since she wasn't really the kind of person who was good at subtlety. That's actually what he was worried about the most: her face. What if she looked disgusted? What if she looked like she wanted to throw up? What if she DID throw up?

Okay, so he was being dramatic. She wasn't going to throw up. But she could be disappointed in him. She could tell their parents. He had to be careful.

"Sarah?" He knocked on her door. He knew she was home.

Sarah had been in the process of writing out one of those ridiculous, blatantly 'just wanted to talk because I'm lame and I miss you' texts to Toby when she heard the knock at her door, and her eyes widened slightly as she quickly shoved her phone into her purse.

Hearing Wes' voice relaxed her a little, and she even managed a small smile as she responded. "Come in!"

He pushed open the door. Already, he felt like he was sweating bullets, even if he wasn't actually sweating. He'd never been this nervous to talk to his sister before. It was a strange feeling. Maybe he was the one who was going to vomit?

"Hey. What are you up to in here?" He leaned against her door frame, not wanting to interrupt and sit down if she was in the middle of something important. She didn't look like she was doing anything, though.

Sarah felt her pulse jump at his question but willed herself to remain calm. She was one of the worst liars on the face of the planet, and her brother knew her well enough to know that and to see through any pathetic attempt at a charade.

In fact, her delay had probably already made him suspicious, and she felt herself panicking as she blurted out, "Nothing. You know. Sitting. And stuff."

Well, she put up a good effort.

She was right. He did know her well enough to see through charades. Fortunately for Sarah, Wes was otherwise distracted. Instead of narrowing his eyes and asking her for the real answer, he accepted it and nodded. "Sitting. How fun. Mind if I... join you?" He gestured to the desk chair, but pulled it out and plopped himself in it before she could answer.

"What's been new with you?" God. He couldn't just say it, could he? Nope. He had to open with something.

Now it was Sarah's turn to raise an eyebrow. How in heaven's name had she just slipped through that one unscathed? It was impossible.

"Nothing," she began warily, eyeing her brother up and down for some sort of a hint. What had him so distracted? Had he broken up with his girlfriend in some sort of a drastically ungentleman-like fashion and knew she was going to kick his butt for it once she found out? Or maybe the whole bully issue was coming back up?

"...What's new with you?"

He shrugged. "Same old, same old." He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "Just thinking about some stuff. Or rather, some stuff has me thinking." He was being vague now. "Secrets, I guess. You know? I'm just not into them, I suppose. They bug me out. I hate having them, and I hate it when I feel like other people have them. Most people probably do." Wes wasn't sure where he was going with this, but he paused in case Sarah wanted to throw her two cents in.

Sarah choked a little at the mention of secrets.

Okay, so maybe he wasn't as distracted as she thought. Maybe he was just testing her. Maybe this was all some big ploy to get her to lie to him so that she would feel horrendously guilty about it and spend the next several months making it up to him because she was the worst sister ever, and what kind of sister kept secrets like this from her brother anyway?

She inhaled sharply to stop her thought process and looked up at him again. "Secrets, huh?" Her voice came out a little squeaky, and she was unable to bite back a small grimace. "Yeah, no. Those are... those are bad. Definitely... bug me out. Bugged out. Way out."

He rested his hand on his neck. "Yeah, you looked bugged out." He narrowed his eyes at her, trying to figure out if she was on to him or not. After a moment, he looked down at his legs, which were bouncing.

"Let's say there was a situation happening. And this situation... well, it's probably best to leave Mom and Dad out of it."

"Situation?" Now her voice had definitely gone up at least an octave (possibly two), and her legs suddenly started mimicking his as the bounced up and down nervously. She hadn't actually thought about how Wes would react to her dating Toby. I mean, what would he think of her dating someone Jewish? What would he think of her dating someone seriously at all? And then there was the whole mutant issue, which she absolutely was not at liberty to even tell him in the first place, so she'd have to somehow totally clamp down on that little piece of knowledge, and Jimminy freaking Crickets she was not good at this stuff.

"Would you say this situation is, you know, like, completely unforgiveable, or is it, um, the type of situation they eventually move on from or-?"

He hated pussyfooting around, but it was difficult to gauge a reaction if you flat out told someone something. He had to beat around the bush. So far, with how nervous and weird she was acting, it wasn't looking good. Did she know?

"It depends on the person, I think. Mom and Dad? Yeah, probably completely unforgivable. I think there'd be some kind of ceremonial witch burning ceremony or something. Someone our age might have less of a hard time dealing with it. I don't know. It's hard to say."

Sarah gawked a little at the blunt answer she received. He sure wasn't beating around the bush, was he? Witch burning. Jeez. Of course, he didn't know the whole mutant bit, so that had to mean the Judaism was enough to earn this kind of reaction? What happened if he was a mutant, too? Kicked out of the house?

"...Oh. Well. What about... um... siblings? Are they on the witch hunt, too?" she asked weakly.
