Ariella looked at Sarah, practically studying her expression to see if she actually understood what Shabbat was. She wasn't sure if the girl knew what it was but she didn't press it. After all, she was just a friend of Toby's and she wasn't remotely Jewish, so she had no reason to know what it was, so long as she wasn't pressuring Toby do things on Shabbat.
She nodded and shrugged when Sarah refused the food. For a few seconds there was an awkward pause, and Ariella took a deep breath. What was she supposed to grill Sarah about if she wanted to be the cool mom, anyways?
"So.. how'd you two meet? Because you go to JFK, and all," her sentence trailed off and she tried to smile, to lighten the situation a little. For Christ's sake, she may be intimidating and it may be awkward, but she didn't want to make Sarah piss herself right there on the kitchen floor.
