Sarah had no idea what Shabbos was, but she was willing to guess it had something to do with a holy day, like Sundays were for her. She was nowhere near bold enough to ask for details about it at that point. Maybe she'd ask Toby about it later.
The thought of her being capable of eating anything at that moment was laughable, but Sarah managed not to voice that sentiment and answered politely, "Oh, no, I'm okay, thank you."
Uh oh. Now what was she supposed to say? What did you talk about with your boyfriend's mom who he had been afraid to introduce you to? Sarah sure as heck didn't know, and she gripped her glass tightly as she glanced over at Toby across the table. David freaking Bowie, an awkward silence was coming. And awkward silences often resulted, in Sarah's case, with word vomit, and she couldn't think of a more painful situation for it.
