Abby's breath caught as the pain subsided. Her heart was already racing and she felt like her heart was about to beat out of her chest. The baby started to tumble around, as if the baby was angry that Abby was being moved by Carter. She started to sob when Carter picked her up, her thoughts going crazy thinking of the possibilities of what was wrong. She was a bio whiz, so she could only imagine what was happening. But the one thing that seemed to stick was that she had lost the baby, or was about to lose the baby.
She curled up in Carter's arms, and wrapped her arms around his neck as tight as she could. As the shooting pains continued to roll through her stomach, Abby's whole body would go rigid. She didn't know where Carter was taking her or what he had been saying to anyone, but she did know that it felt like a gremlin was tearing her apart from the inside. Blood started to drip in the wake as the two of them moved and Abby could feel it pooling in her underwear.
Once they were in the car, Abby started shaking her head. The baby had stopped moving when she stopped but shooting pains hadn't stopped coming with a minute and a half between each. Abby didn't look up at Carter, she just looked at the blood on her hand and clothing. "I lost the baby," was all she could say, and so she kept repeating it as they drove off. When Carter pulled her into his lap, Abby buried her face into his chest but still kept saying those four words through the sobs.
In between each time she'd say those four dreadful words, Abby's breath would hitch and eventually she stopped speaking and screamed, clutching her bump again. She was used to aches and pains from the baby but this was different. Something was horribly wrong. Abby was sure that the baby was braking its way out of her Twilight-style.
