Abby had decided to curl up in bed and watch a movie. Carter was working out in the living room and doing his own thing. She figured it would best if he got as much work done as possible considering the baby was going to be coming within a few weeks time. Around 10 o'clock, she made her way out to the kitchen and grabbed a bowl of ice cream. In the trip out there she saw that Carter was already passed out on the couch. She grabbed a blanket off of the back of the couch and covered him with it, looking down at him lovingly. Part of her wanted to curl up with him right there on the couch but she knew they couldn't fit on the couch together with her ready to burst at the seams.
She started to turn off the lights in their apartment as she made her way back to their bedroom at the end of the hallway. Abby passed by the baby's room on her way and peered in. There wasn't much in it yet aside from boxes of things that needed to be assembled like the changing table and the crib. With a hand on her stomach, she spoke to the baby. "This is your room, you know. Daddy's going to put it together for you this weekend, so don't surprise us and come early cause otherwise you're bunking with us. You hear that?" The baby shifted around and got comfy right where she always liked to nestle - right on Abby's sciatic nerve.
Pain shot through her back but it was different than it usually was. "Thanks, kid," Abby said as she stretched a little and made her way back to the bedroom. Perhaps it was different because she was standing up when the baby had settled in for the night. Usually, she was already in bed so that must be it. "Lets watch daddy's movie," she said, still talking to the baby. Within ten minutes of watching Carter's first big movie, Abby had finished the scoop of ice cream she had gone to the kitchen for and was already fast asleep. Carrying around so much extra weight all day long really knocked her out at night.
She hadn't been asleep for very long when she was suddenly being rudely awoken. Abby looked around, dazed and confused at the commotion. "What?" Carter seemed to be freaking out for some reason. Maybe he was sleep walking and having a nightmare that the baby was coming or that they were losing the baby. That must be it. "Carter stop it. Just get in bed already. I want to cuddle." She rolled over and that was when she felt it. From her bump down seemed to be covered in blood - it felt like she was sitting in a pool of it.
Abby rolled back over and flicked on the lamp on her nightstand. Sure as hell, there was blood everywhere. The sheets were drenched, Carter's over-sized t-shirt that she had stolen since none of hers fit her was drenched around her mid-drift, and her underwear were sopping wet with blood. She sat up and looked at Carter, completely floored. Tears started to well up in her eyes and a confused look spread over her face. She tried to speak but nothing came out, Abby just sat there and stared at Carter, silently asking what was happening and what she was supposed to do.
Her hand reached down and touched the blood to make sure it was actually blood and not a smooshed strawberry or pulverized cherry tomato. Abby brought her hand up to her face to examine it and tears started to fall down her cheeks. She looked back at Carter with one bloody hand, hoping he'd have an answer. As soon as she looked at him though, Abby felt another sharp pain shoot through her abdomen. It was like the one she had felt earlier but it hurt more. Abby clamped her eyes shut and curled up to try and get through the pain, a painful gasp slipping out.
