Dear Parent (or parents I guess it's possible you were married/live at the same address),
So they suggested that I write this whole letter to you to enclose with their whole official request for releasing information. Though I'm not really allowed to give you much about me either which leaves me unsure as to what to write. I could go on for pages about how I've grown up with the mystery of who you both are and what sort of people you might have been to have given me up in the first place. I've spoken with my adopted parents however and they've been supportive of me finding out whatever I can about you, however small.
I recently turned 26 as you might remember, and work as a writer in New York City. Personally I don't think that's very telling since about half the population of this city seems to be writers of one sort or another. If you've never been here, I have to highly suggest it just for the sights and sounds and atmosphere. Perhaps that's my small town raising that is coming out, but I wouldn't trade NYC for anywhere else in the country. I haven't had any serious medical issues growing up however, which is good I think. I finished college quite a while ago now, so there's something to be proud of and all my student loans have been paid off.
I think I mostly want to point out that the only thing I want from you is the chance to get to know my family. I don't need money, and I can take care of myself just fine. Even if you could just send me some sort of letter through this proxy, it would be appreciated. I'm hoping by not just trying to do my own research and writing instead of showing up at your doorstep will gain me some goodwill. (Plus how much more cliche can you get than "hi, I think I'm your daughter"?)
Sincerely,
S
