Who: Valerie Spinelli, Sabrina Spinelli (NPC) and Cori Tibbits
What: The girls bump into someone in the hallway
Where: Wyrd Haven Academy
When: Monday around noon
Rating: Depends on who they meet

Valerie slipped out of English class the second the bell rang for lunch and began texting away on her phone. Jordan was still in there talking crap to his dad, and she was sure that was going to take a while. They always spent all this time talking crap to each other. Then, she couldn't criticize him too much. The only other person she was friends with besides Jordan was her mother, exactly the person she was texting now to find out if she would get to see her for lunch. Yeah, they had their little altercations every once in a while, but lunch time together was sacred. All fights were put on hold until after lunch was over. Spinelli's were a tight-knit group despite how much they fought amongst themselves.

"ValValValValVal!"

Valerie turned her head at the familiar sound of her little sister running down the hall toward her. "Hey Bree. Whatcha got there?"

Sabrina Spinelli, age 6, proudly displayed the picture she had colored of their family.

"What the hell is that?" Valerie asked, pointing at a purple blob at the bottom of the page.

"Vincent," Sabrina replied as if this was perfectly obvious, "he says he's always wanted to be a purple cat."

"Riiiiiiiight." Valerie rolled her eyes and kept on walking. For a while there, they all thought Bree just had a really active imagination. Turns out she could actually speak to animals. Val thought that was even creepier than an active imagination.

"Hey, do you know where Suzy is today?" Sabrina asked, running past Val and walking backward as she spoke to her older sister. Val kept texting away.

"Jordy says she's got the flu," Val replied. She glanced up at her sister briefly but was too slow to warn her with her, "Bree, look out!"

Sabrina had managed to backward walk right into someone, and she was now running back over to Valerie and hiding behind her big sister. "Bree, are you okay?" Valerie looked over at the person and shrugged.

"Sorry."

Cori looked down at her phone as she was walking to her next class. She'd been going back and forth with a few of her friends for a while now, talking about how a particular teacher they hated at the moment. Was it really necessary to assign a six page paper on a Monday morning, first thing when they walked into the classroom? As if the teachers didn't give enough homework as it is, never mind it being the end of the school year and finals coming up.

She stopped in the middle of the hallway when her phone buzzed in her hand again. Cori smirked at the text that she'd just gotten, suggesting pranks they might be able to play on said teacher when someone rudely bumped into her and made her stumble. Sure, she had been the one to randomly stop in the middle of the hallway, but people had eyes.

Cori straightened up though and shoved her phone in her back pocket. She hadn't heard any of what the girl said but looked over at her with one eyebrow raised. She rubbed her chest with a balled up fist to sign sorry to the girls but then signed, 'Watch where you go,' as well. It wouldn't surprise her if either of the girls had no idea what she had said to them just then but it was worth a shot.

Val held her sister close to her. They may have been the type of sisters to fight over the tiniest things, but when they were in a pickle together, they stuck together. When she realized it was actually Cori that Bree had run into, she eased up her grasp on Bree a little. Cori Tibbits didn't scare her, and Valerie didn't know sign language, but she could tell readily enough just by looking at her face that Cori seemed annoyed by the whole thing. It had been somewhat Bree's fault, but Val would never throw her sister under the bus like that. At least not to anyone but their parents.

"Next time don't stand in the middle of the hallway like a statue." She flipped her phone around and stuffed it into her pocket.

"Why did she rub her chest like that?" Bree asked, "I'm not that tall."

"It's sign language," Valerie explained. "She can't hear what you say, but likely she can read your lips." The concept seemed lost on her sister, but that didn't matter much. She glanced back at Cori and repeated slowly so Cori could read her lips perfectly.

"Sooooooooorryyyyyyyyyyy."

Cori's face scrunched up as she pieced together what Valerie had just said. She only caught a few words like 'don't' and 'middle' but she could only assume what ever else Valerie said was just as snippy as she tended to be. It wasn't like she hadn't already apologized. Then again, the girls probably had no idea that that's what she was doing when she rubbed her chest.

She saw the mouth of the younger Spinelli girl start moving and squinted, trying to make out what she was saying. If she really cared, she would have tried harder to understand the girl and lip read but she didn't seem to be saying anything rude considering she was still hiding behind Valerie. But then they were both talking and Cori looked at them, rather confused. What ever they were saying, wasn't directed to her though so she just watched them go back and forth.

Cori laughed at Valerie when she spoke so slowly to her and pulled a small notepad and pen out of her backpack. 'I'm deaf, not dumb,' she scribbled down, ripping it out and giving it to Valerie smirking still.

Valerie looked at the paper in mild disgust. She didn't touch it, didn't want anything to do with the other girl, didn't want to incriminate herself in any way. You know, unless she had to pound her to the ground or something, but that was totally different. She was always better at physical defense anyway. With a raised eyebrow, she just moved her neck to the side so that the paper wasn't obstructing her view and said, "Could have fooled me."

And with that, she took her sister's hand and tugged her passed Cori, all the while telling herself, Be the bigger person. Leave the scene. Don't get in anymore trouble. Usually, Jordan was her conscience here, but he was no where in sight at the moment. She had to be her own conscience at the moment, and that rarely worked out anyway.

Cori's smile faded when Valerie didn't even bother to take the paper from her and instead looked around it. Cori would be the first to admit that she knew that she could be a bitch to others sometimes but anyone who had just been bumped into, accidentally or not, wasn't always in the nicest of moods towards the culprit. But it wasn't like she had yelled at the girls or tossed them into a garbage can, or even insulted them.

The last thing she wanted to do in the middle of the school day was fight with Valerie. But something in her was curious about the girl. She crossed out the first sentence and scribbled beneath it, 'What's your problem? Did I hurt step on Bree?' Cori trailed after the two girls and tapped Valerie on the shoulder, showing her the new note. She took a step back from the girls and looked at them, confused about why Valerie was being so rude over something as minuscule as an accident.

"Don't touch me!"

Right, so Val could be a little on edge about people other than her family members or Jordan getting close to her. Years of nightmares and terrible visions that began just like that had her traumatized. She knew Cori couldn't get her attention otherwise, but Val was more of a shoot and ask questions later type of person. She shrugged the shoulder where Cori tapped her as if it now burned red hot and read the stupid note to herself.

"What does it say?" Bree asked.

"Gimmie a pen," Val replied with a sigh.

"What?"

"A pen, Bree! A pen!"

And in Valerie's outstretched hand, she received a purple crayon. Val kept her annoyed muttering to a minimum as she crayoned in her reply. 'Every1's fine. Go back 2 ur mindless texting.'

Cori's eyes widened when she saw how rude Valerie was, even to her sister. She didn't understand why the girl was so on edge and angry. Something had to be bothering her. She took the paper from her though and read the crayon. 'Well that's a lie,' she thought to herself as she tried to think of how to respond. She didn't want to anger Val any more than she already was but she also didn't want her to go and piss off more people who got in her path.

'Clearly you're not fine.' Cori passed it back and shrugged. She sighed and stuffed the pen and paper back in her bag. Was there even a point to sticking around Valerie if she was just going to yell at her more?

Val rolled her eyes and muttered something that sounded like, "What are you, my therapist?" Likely not the best reply but then Val wasn't going to go on some stupid rant about how Woe is me, I didn't sleep last night and my life totally sucks cause of my stinking visions boo-freaking-hoo. Instead she wrote, 'I'm okay. Just-' She thought for a moment of what to say just as her cell phone buzzed in her pocket. She smirked. 'Just hungry. Gonna meet my mom 4 lunch.'

She looked it over once before returning it and just raised an eyebrow at Cori. What was she going to do next? Take out the ink blot test? Meanwhile, Bree was tugging on Valerie's shirt. "Not now, Bree," she said through clenched teeth.

"What's happening?" Bree asked.

"Nothing. Just keeping us from seeing mom, that's all." If Jordan was here, this would have gone a lot smoother.

Cori scrunched up her face when she read Valerie's lips. This girl had a serious attitude problem. She read what Val wrote and rolled her eyes at her, shaking her head disapprovingly. Sure, people got angry when they were hungry or were late for something but this wasn't the first time Valerie had been a jerk. She scribbled a quick 'w/e' on the paper and handed it back to Valerie, turning and leaving the two girls.

As she walked away, Cori balled up her first with her thumb sticking out and lightly tapped it against her temple a couple of times, signing 'asshole.' She doubted that Valerie or Bree would know what it meant but if they did, it wasn't any sweat off of her back. She had at least made an effort to be nice to the girl and all she got back was sass.

Valerie and Sabrina just watched her go. Val crumpled up the paper and tossed it behind her, not caring where it landed.

"She's not normal, is she, Val?" Bree asked, again reaching to take Val's hand.

Val let her but stood motionless for a minute. True, Cori Tibbits hadn't ever really done anything to merit Val's anger, but there was something about her that Val didn't like. It wasn't her fault. Was she supposed to get along with everyone? Definitely not. Besides, she didn't need anyone other than her family and Jordan.

"None of us are normal, Bree," she said, turning and heading toward the cafeteria and just giving her sister's hand a squeeze.

"None of us."
