Who: Sarah and Toby
What: First Date!
When: Backdated to Thursday night
Where: Starting at the soccer fields
Rating: TBD (probably low)
Status: Incomplete

It was chaos in the girls' locker room. Sarah had made the mistake of gushing about her date to the team.

"Wear this one!"

"No! Don't you dare!"

"Wait, come back! Your hair!"

Although Sarah had originally planned on giving up and slumming it a little, the girls had objected profusely. They had brought a variety of hair care products, make up, an assortment of clothes, and even high heels which Sarah had managed to find the will power to reject, much to her team mate's disappointment.

Once the dust had settled, Sarah was left in a pink sundress and sandals, smoothed out hair, and light make up. She exited the locker room followed by a coo of appreciation from her team mates, who all insisted on following her to the parking lot.

"Is that him? He's cute!"

Sarah suddenly felt nervous as she spotted him and found herself fidgeting with her dress.

"Jenny! Sh, he'll hear you!"

"Let him hear me! Does he have a brother?"

Sarah let out a small laugh and turned to her friends. "Right. So. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow." She was briefly swarmed by a group hug, before they retreated somewhat to their own corner, though it was painfully obvious they were still watching.

She sucked in a deep breath, tightened her grip on her shoulder bag, and approached him. "Hi Toby."

Toby was waiting sheepishly in the parking lot, watching the whole spectacle take place. By the time Sarah's teammates had retreated his face was bright pink. He hadn't been expecting such a turnout. But then, what did he know about girl first date rituals? He had simply showered after practice and made sure he put on some deoderant. His hair was still slightly damp, but he was clean and ready to go. And starving. Really. He could eat a cow.

"Hey Sarah," he grinned, "How was practice?"

Oh God, he was blushing. "Uh, it was good. Yours?" She heard a round of giggles from her friends and shot them a look.

"I'm sorry if you heard all that. They get kind of carried away sometimes. You know, mob mentality and all that." She had the urge to stick her hands in her pockets, but she didn't have any. She was nervous, which made her even more concerned as her nerves tended to cause her klutziness to rear its ugly head even moreso than usual.

"Oh, pretty good, I guess." It was practice, so nothing too exciting about it, but he asked the question in the first place. Great conversation starter, Toby. Way to go.

"Uh..." Toby's blush deepened. He had definitely heard most of it. Where Sarah couldn't stuff her hands in her pockets, however, he could and did. "No big deal. I do have a brother, though, you can let them know. He might be a little young for their tastes though." Try pre-pubesent. Technically they weren't related though so they didn't look alike anyway. "You look great though."

Sarah grimaced. "Oh jeez, I'm sorry," she groaned. "Jenny is kind of over the top sometimes. But I'll be sure to mention your kid brother to her." At least she'd been shouting about how good-looking he was and not something insulting.

"So um. Hungry?" The sooner she could escape her friends' prying eyes the better.

"It's okay, really." If nothing else, it had been an ego boost for a relatively humble kid.

"Starving!" He admitted with a grin, "Any ideas?" Despite his recent misgivings about a lot of things, he was still pretty good at following most of his mom's rules, even when it came to food. So they would probably have to go somewhere with kosher options. Good thing they were in New York. "I know a few good delis. And diners." Something greasy sounded really good about now.

"Well, I have a car, so we can go wherever you'd like, really." Mostly because she currently felt incapable of making any decisions after having to choose her outfit, shoes, make up, hairstyle, and perfume rapid-fire. "I'll eat just about anything." Sarah was not the picky type, especially when she was hungry after practice.

A car! Wow! Her family must have been totally loaded or something! Toby took the subway everywhere. Needless to say, he was totally jealous. But too hungry to really think about it. "I know this great place we could go on [this is a street name]. They have huge sanwiches and the best french fries I've had in my life."

Sarah's family was certainly well off in the scheme of things, but she did her best not to act like it. Her family was ridiculous enough with their anti-mutant protests without having to throw wealthy into the mix. "You've sold me on the idea," she said with a small laugh. "Come on. My car's right here." She ignored her friends cat calls as she led him over and hopped into the driver's seat.

"Sweet!" He followed her over to the car, giving the girls a small wave to be friendly and slid into the passenger's seat. "Do you need directions or anything?" Not that he was awesome at giving them or anything, but. It was thoughtful of him to ask all the same.

Sarah was glad she was unable to hear the giggles of her friends once the door was closed. She relaxed a little at the realization and buckled her seat belt. "Well, I think I know where it is, and my phone will save the day if not." She tossed him a smile as they started off.

Once she managed to find parking, she hopped out of her car and looked over at Toby. "That wasn't so bad." She was both shocked and proud that she had managed not to get lost.

Toby hadn't been in a lot of cars since Frye Island, and then they were rental cars when they went on trips, or on a rare occasion, taxis. He was pleasantly surprised that she didn't drive like a taxi driver. At least, he hadn't been clinging to the door handle for dearlife. "Nope, not bad." He agreed.

Toby led the way into the restaurant and got them a booth. It was just a small, hole in the wall diner, but it was clean, bright and smelled delicious. It had a little it of kitchy Nnostalgiafor a time almost one hundred years past, but it was one of Toby's favorites. They were given menus, and the waiter politely left thrm alone to contemplate drinks and food. "So, what looks good?"

Sarah grinned at the style of the place. She was glad he hadn't taken her some place super nice. She always felt awkward at fancy restaurants, though her parents seemed keen on them. "Well, obviously I have to get something with your famous french fries," she answered with a grin.

She peeked over her menu at him. "You know, I realized after you called me the other day that I know nothing about you." She eyed him for a moment. "I mean, minus the fact that you're a roadie and play soccer."

Toby couldn't afford a fancy restaurant without quite a bit of planning ahead. So everything worked out pretty well for both of them in that case. Anyway, fancy restaurants weren't very good at giving you more food for the price. "That won't be difficult. They come with pretty much everything."

She had a point there. His face flushed a little, and he went back into bashful mode, "True. But I also don't know much about you, aside from soccer and the news paper, and that you might just be a little clumsy." Yeah, he was starting to figure that out. "What do you want to know?"

Sarah's cheeks pinkened a little. Sure, she had largely accepted the fact that she was a bit on the klutzy side, but it was a little embarrassing knowing that someone else had picked up on it so soon. "Oh. Well, yeah. That's true."

Luckily, the waiter returned as a distraction, and Sarah ordered a sandwich and, of course, french fries.

She waited until he had ordered to speak again. "I don't know. I guess we should start simple. Liiike. How old are you? Because if you're secretly 12 this could get awkward."

Toby grinned as she blushed. "Well, if you weren't we wouldn't have met, probably." He put in an order for a Cherry Coke and a hamburger with extra pickles.

"Do I look 12?" He asked with a mock shocked expression. "I'm 16, as of May 2nd. Are you secretly 20?"

"No," she answered with a soft laugh. "But stranger things have happened." She noticed that his suggestion for her own implausible age was older. Maybe she was just, like, totally mature looking.

Chuckling at her internal monologue and at the notion of her looking 20, she shook her head. "No, I'm sixteen, too. My birthday was in April. I missed yours!" She supposed she wouldn't really have known what to do anyway, but that was beside the point!

"So what school do you go to then? Since you're not at mine."

Well, to be honest he didn't think she looked twelve or twenty. "True, it's a pretty small world."

"I missed yours first," he pointed out. Not that they'd even met yet. "That means you haven't had your license long either."

"I go to [insert private Orthodox school here]." He sighed.it epwas alright, but if he was going to be honest, he would rather go to the public school with the band. Or the mutant school with Dale. Really, he felt thathe should have been going there all along. He knew all about the project, and he had been developing his powers for about three years now. It seemed like the more logical place for him to go, but he'd probably never say so. "And you?"

"Yeah, I know. I'm not a bad driver, though, promise!" She'd managed to get them both to the diner alive, anyway, which may or may not have been quite the conscious effort...

"Oh, wow, so you're Jewish." Her hand unconsciously reached for her cross necklace. She supposed it wasn't exactly a surprise that she wasn't Jewish. There weren't many blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jews running around these days, but he was going to an Orthodox school, and she wasn't entirely sure, but she was under the impression that it was kind of an intense version of the religion, right? What did that mean?

"I go to the public school. PS ###. I think one of the girls in your band goes there, actually. I thought I saw her around school, but I wasn't sure if it was her."

"No, I didn't think so!" Toby assured her, "Better than a taxi driver!" Was that a compliment? He thought those guys were nuts, so he hoped it was.

Toby blushed a little. He wasn't sure why. It was just sort of a big deal, he supposed. It always seemed like it anyway. Ari didn't want him dating non-Jewish girls. Or dating period, really. Was that stopping him? Not really. He wasn't interested in any of the girls he knew. If he was limited to girls he didn't like, he honestly probably would never get married. But he was interested in Sarah. Was that so wrong? "Uh, yeah. Pretty much. I mean. Yeah." right now wasn't really the time to whip out his whole life story. Or was it?

"Oh yeah! Eden? She's pretty cool."

Kelly freaking Clarkson. How had such an innocent question gotten them into awkward territory? She'd just been asking about his school! She didn't expect religion to stick its head in the middle of things! Better now than later, she supposed. I mean, what if they'd gotten all serious and then all of a sudden he realized she was Catholic and that they couldn't be together, and there was this epic heart breaking scene possibly involving her being left standing alone in a torrential downpour?

"I'm Catholic!" she blurted, eyes widening slightly after she realized it had slipped out. Word vomit. It would be the death of her.

Recover! Recover!

"I mean, I don't care that you're Jewish. I just- you know. I don't know if you care that I'm... not?"

"Um." Toby blinked at her. If they were going to be blurting things out randomly, he might as well share another weird secret, right? "Okay." He shrugged, it wasn't a big deal to him, "It's alright with me."

"So long as we're sharing, I'm adopted." That was weird right? It took the edge off the religion conversation, but was it in the right direction? Probably not. Oh well, too late now.

Sarah let out a snort of laughter as Toby confessed he was adopted- not because it was funny to be adopted, but because clearly her outburst was so ridiculous that Toby had felt the need to reciprocate, and it was adorable and wonderful all at once.

"Sorry. You being adopted isn't funny, I promise. It's cool, actually. I've never met anyone who's adopted. I'm just laughing at myself for being... ridiculous and apparently incapable of making a good first impression." And digging herself a hole quite steadily, it seemed.

Toby was a little confused when she laughed at his outburst, but things cleared up pretty quickly. He grinned bsahfully at her and even laughed a little.

"Nah, it's okay. Really," he insisted scratching the back of his head. "Better to get all the weird stuff out now, right? No secrets later? And, i think you're making a great impression." He took a sip of comlimentary water, "Very... Memorable."

Well, it was probably the best way to put it. He wouldn't be forgetting this night. Ever. "You're welcome."

Sarah looked up as her food arrived (thankfully) to spot a rather flush-faced Toby sitting across from her. She was nowhere near nervous enough not to eat, so she started with the famous french fries, popping one into her mouth.

"Whoa. These are awesome." Another set followed rapid-fire.

No amount of blushing in the world was going to keep Toby from eating either. He was starving. And he knew just how good everything was there.

Toby poured catsup from the old glass bottle like a pro and scarfed down a few of his own fries. "Right? Best you've had in your life?"

"Definitely up there," she agreed with a grin, before taking a bite of her sandwich. Everything always tasted ten times better when you were hungry, so she probably wasn't much of an impartial judge, but this place was awesome as far as she was concerned.

Once she'd chewed and swallowed she turned her attention back to him. "So. Tell me something else I don't know about you. I have four solid facts about you, but a girl needs at least five." Jewish. Sixteen. Soccer. Adopted. He was way more interesting than her.

"Well if you know a place with better fries, don't hold back. We'll go there next time." Yeah, he was implying that there should be a next time. And why not? It seemed to be going well, as far as he was concerned!

Five facts. She had four. What else could he tell her that wasn't totally off limits? (Because talking about powers was ususlly a big no) He had to think about it as he chewed a big bite of burger, "i'm in band. And jazz band."

Next time? Hee. He wanted a next time. Despite the fact that she'd already had a foot in mouth moment and had proven several times over that she was one of the most klutzy girls on the face of the planet, he wanted another date! "I'll give it some thought," she answered with a small smile.

"You said you played bass when I met you, didn't you? Is that what you play in jazz band? What else do you play, then?"

He was going to take that as a yes.

"Did I?" Sometimes his memory wasn't the best. It was missing a few years in there, "I must have if you remember that! I also play tuba." Basically the two biggest instruments he could carry. Thankfully he had one of each for home and a separate set for school, so he didn't have to do much hauling on the subway.

"Wow, that's intense. I've seen those things. They're huge. I'm pretty sure I would fall over trying to carry one." Sarah was athletic, sure, but she was also horrendously uncoordinated. She was not the kind of person who should be asked to march in formation carrying expensive instruments.

"Can I just point out that you are way more interesting than I am? It's kind of embarrassing."

"It's mostly hollow, so it's not as heavy as it looks." He shrugged, "And I don't have to take it back and forth. I have one at school and one at home. It's not too bad.

Toby downed a few more fries and shook his head, "I don't think I'm qualified to say that's true. We've only been talking about me. Tell me something about you."

She laughed. "I was afraid you might ask me that. I mean, you know that I'm a soccer player. That I work for the paper... I don't know. I don't play any musical instruments, and I'm not exactly artistically talented outside of taking pictures." Definitely making herself seem exciting, wasn't she? "I have two brothers?" She shrugged her shoulders. "I like the fact that you picked a diner tonight."

"Two brothers? Older, younger?" Maybe two guys who would hate him? He hoped not. "I have two young siblings. A sister and a brother. They're not adopted." He was the special one like that.

Toby's eyebrows went up when she mentoined that she liked the diner, "Why's that?"

"One's older. He's eighteen, and the other's younger, 13," she explained. And it was safe to say the youngest one wasn't much of a threat. The older, well, he tended to let his protectiveness come in waves, but he was relatively harmless as far as she was concerned.

Although she was beyond curious as to why only Toby was adopted, she was tactful enough not to blurt out 'Why?' when he told her so. She focused on his diner question instead. "Oh. Well. Because it's like... a real place. It doesn't need all the bells and whistles or whatever to try and win you over. It's just good. And that, you know, speaks for itself." She shrugged.

"So you're in the middle?" That's where his sister was, right in between two boys. "Are you guys pretty close?"

Good thing she didn't or he'd be forced to let her in on that long and arduous tale, and that was really encroaching on non-first-date material, and the thought of Toby telling her that was reminicent of the vision she had of being left in the rain after blurting out that she was Catholic. Anyway.

Toby nodded, "That's exactly why I like it." It was his favorite place. Good food, the staff was nice and helpful and it was clean and bright.

"Never," she answered teasingly. She waved off the notion that she might be serious and dug around in her bag until she found her phone. "So my camera's in the car, but some of the band pictures are on here, and the one of us is in there, too." It took her a moment to track it down, but she passed her phone over.
