Who: Cori and Dakota
What: Hanging out in the school
When: After school
Where: WHA
Rating: PG

Cori looked into the auditorium where there was a man giving a speech. She could sit there and try to understand what he was saying by reading his lips but it wasn't worth her time or effort. She didn't feel like she needed to sit and watch Mr. Bacchus give a speech about mutant success in face of an anti-mutant society. What kind of name was Bacchus anyways? Cori scoffed at the thought of going but instead sat in the back, drawing in a notebook.

An hour and a half passed by and Cori had no idea what was happening in the lecture but apparently it was over and she was the only one still sitting in the auditorium, working on a drawing of a guy in one of her classes, holding fire in one of his hands. He was pretty cute but he'd never give her the time of day. Cori sighed and grabbed her back pack, heading out of the auditorium. As she turned left out of the room she ran into a rather tall guy and stumbled a little but then phased right through him. She paused and rubbed her chest in a circle with a balled up fist to say 'I'm sorry' to the man for running into him so carelessly, not that she really was sorry for doing it.

Cori again furrowed her brow as she tried to understand what he was saying to her. She understood enough of it to react to it by raising one eyebrow and thinking of how to respond. She knew that Dakota, or rather Mr. Hopkins, wasn't the best at signing and it was cute that he was making an effort. But Cori wanted to talk to him, not play a guessing game of what the other was saying.

Shoving her drawing pad into her book bag, Cori fished out a regular note book and pen. 'Why not just get someone who's a better role model then?' Cori scribbled on the paper. She thought for a minute if she wanted to write the next sentence down but did it anyways just for a laugh. 'And it doesn't matter how well he speaks. He doesn't speak my language.' She grinned and passed the paper to Dakota. It'd be easier than trying to sign all of that to him.

Well that lost some of its fun though he would have been half the day trying to put together half of her signs and just as bad trying to reply. He took the notebook though and motioned for her to follow a bit to where the lighting was better in the auditorium and slid down to sit on the floor. Dakota just pulled a pen out of his pocket to save time of passing that back and forth as well and just wrote underneath in his best handwriting. 'I believe he's a friend of the Sullivans, and his dad has been relatively important. Most of the really important ones are probably too busy though being successful to bother with us.' He smiled before adding, 'Next time we'll just have to bring in someone who is bilingual enough to do both at once. Or get a translator who isn't too busy so some of these kids can learn a little more.'

Cori followed Dakota into the auditorium and took a seat opposite him. Immediately she fixed her shirt and hair so that it wasn't too messy now that he could actually see her. She may not be the most girly of his students but even Cori was smart enough to know that guys liked a girl who was well kept. Not that she was thinking Mr. Hopkins would like her like that. But she could dream.

She took the note back and read through it, scoffing at first but then laughing at his second comment. 'Great, so the rest of us get to listen to some reject babble on about his self-proclaimed success.' Cori rolled her eyes as she wrote it and made an L with her fingers before pressing it to her forehead. Surely Dakota would understand that one since even her peers mimicked the gesture from time to time.

She drew an arrow up to his other comment and wrote at the opposite end of the point, 'That's a funny joke.' The likelihood that a teacher would speak up and actually make an effort to have someone translate a guest speaker so Cori would pay more attention was slim. Half of the teachers hadn't even bothered to learn a substantial amount of ASL to accommodate her in the classroom, never mind outside of it.

It was probably a sign of something deeper that he would have been flattered to even think one of his students thought that way about him. Nothing was going to come of it considering just his professionalism, but most people seemed to just discount him as a prude that was more interested in his books than the opposite sex. That or more likely to start quoting bible verses at them if he wasn't throwing holy water. He minded that less than the people who would call him an abomination.

He laughed at her little sign that even he got right off the bat. At least there were a few things that were universally known even if most of them were derogetory. 'I might also be bias because he used to be one of those guys I was expected to chase away from my sisters. Then with my dad that was basically every boy who looked at them.' Dakota was sure her uncle might have plenty of stories about the perils of being a protective younger brother. Then anyone who looked at Dakota probably thought he was just a pushover... Which he usually was, but not when it came to Zona and Brooke.

'Because you'd still be drawing or because it's not high on most people's priorities?' He looked at her thoughtfully. He might be bad at signing, but at least he was usually good about having a cramp in his hand by the end of the class from jotting down important points the whole period. 'Any plans this weekend?' Dakota knew he should probably call his mother on Sunday. He wouldn't but at least the thought was there.

'Thank God I don't have any siblings,' Cori scribbled back. It didn't really matter because she wasn't exactly being chased by any guys, but still. Her twin little cousins were enough for her, thank you very much. Then again, maybe her father had a whole slew of kids that she didn't know about and she was actually a big sister to someone. It didn't really matter. It's not like she'd know if he was showing himself around these parts of town anyways or really want him to come around.

When she read the comment about drawing, Cori looked up at Dakota. 'You noticed I draw,' she didn't put a question mark or a period at the end of the sentence because she wasn't really sure what to say. No one usually paid attention to what she did in class, they just knew she got the work done on time and passed her classes. 'I guess both,' she scribbled underneath her previous comment.

Cori shrugged and moved her arms around like she was running. She didn't feel like writing it down when it was something she could mime out and have him understand easily that she'd probably be at a track meet. Most kids would be celebrating mother's day but Cori had already shipped off a card to her aunt and grandma so she was all set.

Dakota shrugged a little before writing back. 'Siblings aren't all that bad. Then not sure how much you need someone to defend you most of the time. Meaning you do a pretty good job of that yourself.' He didn't like admitting it, but he usually needed the defense of his older brother growing up. It was a little weird when you didn't just know everyone living around you. It was probably why he enjoyed the school where it was largely the same crowd from home. 'You draw better than I do. At least if I recall my really bad attempt at dinosaurs the first day of class. Plus I like doing the creative projects to get you guys learning. Still planning something for finals.' There might have even been a touch of mischief in his smile as he handed it back over.

He just nodded at her little show, pulling the paper back for a moment. 'Need to get going?'

Cori smiled smugly. 'Thanks.' She didn't think she was so blatantly cold towards the other students but apparently even he teachers were taking notice of how she was towards others. It was just frustrating that she didn't get to communicate with more than half of the school because of a verbal language barrier.

She giggled when he mentioned all of the drawings that he had done for them in class. 'Maybe you should talk to Mrs. Spinelli and see if she can help with your drawing abilities. She's amazing.' Cori frowned a little when he mentioned a project for their final. 'I prefer a paper. I don't have to work with anyone on a paper and it's easier.' She knew that her feedback probably was worth nothing but at least she could get it out there.

Cori shrugged. 'I should probably go to practice. Mrs. Elwood is probably wondering where I wandered off to.'

'I was thinking more along the lines of group projects if wanted, but things people might be more interested in and wanted to do a little more research. Like if someone wanted to bring in keyboards to play something and have a short report on music styles of the century in France. Or sketches of fashion changes that could be put up on the board or projected.' Dakota wanted to find something that people could actually connect to since history was rarely a favorite topic. 'As long as you can connect it back to the class, but trying to save you all from long papers that make you just want to sleep. Or you can write about what an awesome teacher I am and there will be A+'s all around.' With a note right under that he underlined twice 'Kidding'.

'I won't keep you then. Piano needs practice or your aunt will kick me if I mess up her choir concert.'

'That sounds like a lot more work than anyone wants to do during the final weeks of school.' Cori grinned when he suggested writing about how good of a teacher he was. She refrained from writing anything back beneath that comment since she was biased. It was probably a good thing that he couldn't read thoughts and she could think before writing things, usually avoiding word vomit. Her cheeks gave her away though as they were a light pink.

'She'd probably do more than kick you.' She'd love to see Dakota get yelled at like she had when she messed stuff up or didn't do homework or just did something that was plain dumb, like go to the city without permission. 'Have fun though.' Cori stood up and waved good bye rather than writing it and fixed her clothes before walking out of the auditorium with a big grin on. Score one for Tibbits; she'd just gotten to have an awesome conversation with the cutest teacher in the school. 'Well.. maybe not awesome but it was something!' Cori thought to herself as she ran down the hallway to Natalie's office.
