Who Toby and Sarah
What The promised phone call
When Monday after school

Sunday had been a busy day. Toby hadn't had a second to himself to call Sarah until he was about ready to crash for the night. And since he didn't want to call her and fall asleep halfway through the conversation, he decided he ought to just do himself a favor and wait. He didn't like it. He had wanted to call her right away, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

So that window between school and soccer practice on Monday would have to be it. Once Toby had gotten home on Saturday night, he added her number to his contact list in his phone. Regretfully, he had to wash the Sharpie off his hand. Too many questions would have been raised by his mom. Or his siblings. It was best to keep secrets. For now, anyway.

But anyway, anticipation was getting the best of him. He barely heard anything his teachers said the last few hours of the day. Once the final bell rang, he shot out the school as if he was on fire. Finally clear of teachers and schoolmates, he pulled out his phone and dialed her number. While sitting down probably would have been the better choice, he started pacing as he waited for her to pick up.

Sarah had been in the process of walking home after school when her phone rang. Jolting slightly, she fumbled around awkwardly for a minute, earning a honk from a car who apparently thought she was in the way (rude), until she finally dug it out of her backpack.

The number was unfamiliar, and her brows furrowed for a moment, before she shrugged and answered it. "Hello?"

"Hey! Hi, it's Toby. You know, from the other night. You threw your camera at me." The minute the words were out of his mouth, he wanted to stuff them back in and sew up his mouth for life. What a dork. Obviously, he didn't do this often.

Toby? Toby?

OH, TOBY. Cute Toby! Roadie Toby! Saturday night picture Toby!

Sarah's eyes widened as she suddenly had the overwhelming urge to fix her hair (which she did via a nearby car window). Thomas freaking Jefferson, he had actually called her!

Play it cool, Clarke.

"Toby! Hi! I was hoping you'd call!" ...Because that didn't sound desperate at all. She grimaced slightly, glad he couldn't see her at that particular point in time. Wasn't it supposed to be easier talking to people on the phone than in person? Wasn't that how this worked?

"How's it going?" That was a safe enough subject change.

There was a long pause before she spoke again. It was nerve racking. Had he somehow added her number in wrong? He had been so careful not to smear it, but maybe he had just read it wrong, but then she finally responded and his fears melted away. She had been hoping he would call. Hoping to hear from him. Hoping. To hear. From him! He did a small victory dance in his head.

Oh, it's going, I guess. Just got out of school. And you?" Okay that was an obvious and boring answer, but good try.

"Oh, yeah me, too. Walking ho-" At which point Sarah's foot opted to catch on a slight incline in the pavement, the sort of thing only she was capable of tripping over.

She let out a small 'oof' as she stumbled forward, phone fumbling ungracefully. Toby was sure to have heard Sarah blurt out 'Calvin Coolage!' as she struggled to regain her balance and control of her cell phone.

Somewhat breathlessly, she finally managed to lift the phone back up to her ear. "Sorry. I uh. Dropped the phone for a second there." That sounded better than 'almost fell on my face in the middle of the sidewalk'.

She let out a small, nervous laugh at herself. "SO."

Calvin who? What was going on? From Toby's end of things, it sounded like her phone had the same idea as her camera. So, he was beginning to see a pattern. Apparently Sarah and technology did not mix well. Good to know?

"Has it been hanging around with your camera?" He asked, biting back a laugh. But seriously. At least it wasn't broken. That would be an unfortunate way to end the conversation. But seriously. "You're okay, right?"

He might have been polite enough not to laugh, but Sarah couldn't help but let out a bright giggle. He was funny. She'd forgotten! "Apparently it has!" she answered, grinning. "I'm fine." For now. Someday, she swore she was going to end up falling down a flight of stairs and through a window into a cactus full of angry ants. It was the way her luck worked.

"Sooo, how've you been?"

Oh there was that laugh he liked! Obviously he would just have to be funny all the time! "You should probably separate them before they get some really drastic ideas." Just a thought. Hide the sad music from them or something.

"Not too bad. Just busy. I would have called you sooner, but yesterday got out of hand. Family stuff, you know?" it wasn't anything special, but between chores and shopping trips, it had been a really long day. Someone needed new shoes, groceries had to be bought, bathrooms needed to be cleaned. Fun times. "And you?"

Sarah was perfectly okay with this whole 'being funny all the time' idea. As someone who was often funny on accident, it would be nice to be around someone who could balance things out by actually being intentionally funny.

Heh. He wanted to call her sooner. He'd managed to call her before the three-day rule AND he'd still wanted to call her sooner. Sarah found herself biting her lip to rein in her giddiness. "Oh, it's fine. I totally get it." Although it was highly unlikely his family stuff was anything like her family stuff, which tended to involve a lot less chores and a lot more anti-mutant protest planning.

"Oh, I've been good. The staff really liked the photos I took, thanks to your body guard skills. I'll have to get you a copy of the paper so you can show your friends."

He was more of an unintentionally-intentionally funny guy. Sometimes his brain forgot to stop his mouth from saying things, but most of the time it worked out to his advantage. Amd yeah, sometimes he really did mean to be funny.

Oh the very different lives they lived. Some day they were going to give both sets of parents an aneurism. But for now, everyone could be happy and ignorant of things to come. "Yeah, pretty lame," he laughed and scratched the back of his neck. It was a nervous habit. But now that he was less tense, he found himself making a beeline for the park bench he had been ignoring.he would be doing enough running back and forth in soccer.

"Aw, it wasn't a big deal," he replied sheepishly, "But they'll like that." Jack especially. "You still have our picture, right?"

"It was a big deal," she argued. "I really appreciated it. Honestly."

He was asking about their picture. Hee. It had turned out pretty well, especially considering she'd done it with the camera turned around. "Of course I have it. I mean, you did ask me to bring it to you. I think I owe you that much after saving the day twice."

Aw shucks. Sarah couldn't see it, but Toby was blushing. "Well, uh... You're welcome." Bright red. He was easily flustered.

"That's true. I mean, I did ask, I don't know about the whole saving the day thing." He was no hero. Well, he was no tights wearing superhero. Who would he be anyway? Plant Boy? He did have good manners, though. That was kinda heroic. Especially in a world where people seemed to have forgotten what manners were. "So, I guess we should hang out some time then. When are you free?"

"Well, I have soccer practice most days during the week, but I'm free after practice is over then." Sort of. If she had her homework done and her mother wasn't hounding her. "Or most of the time during the weekend." Maybe she should've made something up to make her seem more exciting, but honestly, she was eager enough to see him that she didn't want to have her fake schedule interrupt.

"You play soccer too?" Toby was excited about that for whatever reason. Maybe because it meant they had something else in common. "I'm on my way to practice right now!" Or well, he would be if he wasnt sitting on a park bench chatting with Sarah, but he was usually way earlier than everyone else anyway.

"Maybe we could meet up after soccer sometime this week?"

"Yeah! Fullback!" Okay, he played soccer, too. This was clearly meant to be.

"I could do that," she answered, despite being slightly horrified at the notion of having to see him after practice when she was considerably less than perfect-looking. She was pretty sure you were supposed to look awesome on your first date.

...Maybe she could make freshly showered look awesome. Somehow.

"What time does your practice end?"

"Sweet! I play midfield." Definitely meant to be.

Toby wasn't really thinking about her girl issues with not being cute after soccer practice. He was a shower and go type of guy most of the time anyway. He liked to sleep in before school, amd after soccer practice he was pretty ravenous. He didn't have time to worry too much about his appearence.

"5:15-ish, most of the time. We could grab something to eat?"

"If you can around until 5:30, that'll work!" Eat. Dinner. Dinner date. REAL DATE! She could already feel those wheels spinning, trying to figure out what was appropriate to wear, thinking of how many friends she was going to need to gush to once she got off the phone. "What day?"

"Yeah sure! 5:30 works!" He made it home for dinner way less often than his mom would like, but soccer practice ran late sometimes, and he also hung out with Jack a lot afterward. He usually did his homework while the band practiced. Or really late at home.

"Today is Monday... How about Thursday?"

"Thursday sounds great," she answered back cheerfully. It would give her plenty of time to make up an excuse to tell her mom about why she wasn't going to be home for dinner on a school night.

"Sweet!" He was probably going to have to book it to soccer now, but he didn't care. He was grinning ear to ear, "So it's a date then, I'll see you Thursday. Where do you want to meet?"

Heh. He'd even called it a date.

"Are you at [insert excellent name here] fields by any chance? I know there's a boys' team who practices out there. If you are, I mean, we could meet by the parking lot?"

"I will see you then." Was it totally ridiculous that she didn't want to hang up? She'd make him do it first. "Bye, Toby."
