Who: Cate Abernathy & Noah Riley
What: Running into each other
Where: corner grocer, East New York, Brooklyn
When: May 7th, 2047
Rating: TBD

It was Monday evening and the sun was still shining. The sidewalks were flooded with people, coming home from work, going to work, basking in the rare vitamin D, and asking for change. Noah held Evie on his left hip and had Ruby tagging along to his right, a tiny hand wrapped around her father's belt loop, so she wouldn't be swept away in the current of bodies. They wove expertly through the crowds and slipped into the dark, unnamed grocery store they frequented. The shelves were only about shoulder height, but the shop was big enough to have a relatively wide selection of goods - and the cashiers knew the girls, and would let them help bag. And it was usually empty of other people - a blessed thing in this city.

Ruby, her hair cut sharp at the chin, skipped ahead in the tutu and Batman shirt she'd dressed herself in this morning before school. Noah set Evie down, so she could follow her sister toward the milk aisle. He adjusted his tinted glasses and checked his pockets quickly to make sure he'd brought along his cigarettes and wallet. The hard squares he felt through his work pants told him he had. - He'd just gotten off work and had relieved Laney of the girls, so she could get ready to head in for her nightshift. He didn't mind. He liked taking them shopping. They did most of the work.

"Don't forget the macaroni, Rube," he reminded his daughter, raising his voice over the short shelves, where he saw her little head bouncing by.

It'd been some day, that was for sure. Cate had discovered several things during the previous hours that one would not soon forget. For one, she learned that her new job was tedious and full of the type of people she severely disliked. For another, it was a long seven hours from start until finish, with minimum alone time and a small, half hour break at 10:30 to cut her day in 'half'. Last, the subway system was confusing and she hated it.

And okay, she'd maybe also discovered that she was now in the lives of two people from her former life-- the one she thought she'd left behind. And she was okay with it. David made her feel young again. Stupid, too. But young and it was just so good to see him. In fact, she was still smiling about it, all the way to the small grocery store on the corner of her very long street (she lived about 7 more blocks down).

She only needed to pick up a few items. Namely milk, bread and juice (y'know, the essentials). The few dollars in her pocket were bound to be enough, and it would last her the week until her first paycheck. So! She headed towards the dairy section, stopping short to let a small child in a discombobulated outfit dart right in front of her. Kids. Where were the parents?

"Don't forget the macaroni, Rube." Oh. There he was. Typical. A man. Cate turned her head to glance, inconspicuously, toward the voice. The shelves were only so high, and she could see the back of his head perfectly. But. That was it. Giving up, because she wasn't quite as nosy as she used to be, she beelined it to the fridge door and pushed it open. Milk.

Much taller than Ruby's head, a gathering of red hair moved through the aisle toward the fridges in the back with the click of heels on tile following her. Noah raised his eyebrows, tilting his hat up by its brim, as he rounded the corner. Ruby was busy checking out gallons of ice cream through the glass, her hands spread and making prints in the condensation. The redheaded woman was opening the cooler full of milk. She was wearing a tailored gray dress suit that looked like something out of an old movie. It was cut wide around her neck and fell just above her knees. It was hard to miss, too, the perfect hourglass shape her figure cut against the dim lights reflecting in the glass.

"Ruby Roberta, grab some milk, would you? I wasn't planning on staying the night here." Noah stood at the intersection, where the bread aisle ran perpendicular to the fridges of milk and eggs. He leaned carelessly on a display of soup cans, giving his daughter a look that told her to get a move on. Evie was padding around the redheaded woman, looking up at her curiously. "Jesus. Leave her alone, Eve. She'll be out of your way in a minute. Don't act like your mother in public. I've told you."

Uh. Okay. Cate pondered her milk selection feeling more than awkward. A young girl was circling her. The-- rather abrasive-- man was barking orders at his children, while standing there staring. Ruby (Cate could only assume) next to her was practically licking the glass off the ice cream freezer. All in all, it wasn't a situation Cate wanted to be in. Making a snap decision, she reached in and grabbed the 2% before stepping back and letting the fridge door close.

She offered a small smile to the girl staring up at her. "Sorry, was I in your way?" She asked, in that gentle tone that one often adapts when talking to children. "I like your shirt. Yellow is my favorite color." This was a lie, but just as voices often change, people often lie when talking to children.

Noah would've disagreed with Cate's assessment, had he known it. He didn't lie to his children. If they asked him something, he would tell them. He wouldn't be excessive in his description, perhaps, but he wouldn't withhold the truth. When the redhead closed the fridge, milk in hand, and smiled at Evie, Noah's eyes narrowed on her. As was his philosophy in life, his parenting approach was relatively laissez faire. The girls would have to learn to navigate social situations, anyway. Might as well start now. That didn't mean, of course, that he wouldn't look out for them. As shy as ever, Evie averted her eyes, but smiled at the woman's words. She mumbled a thank you, then hurried to hide behind Noah's legs.

Ruby turned her head to watch the interaction. Noah raised his eyebrows again, his hand on his daughter's head. He looked at the woman, her face finally visible. She ...there was something about her that struck Noah like deja vu. "Everyone's in her way," he said, turning to pick the little girl up as if she were as light as a feather. She giggled as he slung her over his shoulder (but carefully, so as not to smash her face into the soup cans. Laney wouldn't like that). "She just inherited a lack of manners."

But then again, what use were manners?

His face. Now that she was finally able to see him... there was definitely something familiar to him. And adding to it his voice? Well, his name was practically on the tip of her tongue. Only, she couldn't quite remember him. Not yet. But she was sure she knew him from somewhere.

"Don't worry. I'm used to it. I work in a school." She smiled at the young girl again, now hanging off her father. What a peculiar family. She'd been close with her parents, but never did she have such a relationship with her father. Jealousy burned up inside her, but it was quickly distinguished. Cate didn't really care for such things anyways. If she did, she'd have a family of her own. As such, the only child she had was roaming around somewhere, but definitely not being raised by her.

Noah had met many people in his life since he'd left the Island - most of whom he'd all but forgotten. But, as the woman spoke, something in the back of his mind told him he'd known her - before leaving the Island. He cocked an eyebrow. Evie began kicking, so he set her down, because he didn't want a pint-sized sandal to the face. She scampered to her sister. Free of children, the man took a moment to look at this familiar stranger.

Then it dawned on him. Of course. ...But she looked astonishingly young. Noah smirked, nudging his glasses up his nose. "Do you?" Now he was definitely sure he recognized the redheaded woman. She hadn't really changed. He should've known. Who else could it be? "That seems uncharacteristic."

Cate raised both her eyebrows. "And who are you to decide what is and isn't uncharacteristic?" She had thought she was surprisingly nice to the young children hovering around him, considering they were quite rude.

Again, had Noah known what the woman was thinking, he would've disagreed. There was a difference, he maintained, between rudeness and not engaging in stupid, baseless practices to put other people at ease. But that was neither here nor there, as he still couldn't read minds. He continued smiling and gave something of a shrug. Ah, yes. Cait Baines. Obstinate as ever.

There was, of course, a strict no smoking indoors law in New York City. Still, mostly out of habit, Noah took a cigarette from the packet in his back pocket. He held it, unlit, between his fingers and gestured toward the woman. "You haven't changed, have you?"

Ah. So she did know him. Or rather, he seemed to know her. And from the sound of it, he knew her well. Still, she couldn't quite put face to name yet. She needed a bit more refreshing. A picture of him from his youth would probably work wonders, too, right about now.

"I think I've changed quite a lot, thank you." She nodded curtly and shifted her gallon of milk to the other hand. "I'd say the same about you, but my subconscious doesn't think it was necessary to remember you." She shrugged as if to say sorry, though it was clear she was being sarcastic about it.

Noah laughed. "I forgot how much of a delight you are," he replied, sticking the cigarette between his teeth. He knelt down onto one knee and held his arms out, as Evie ran over to him, tiny sandals clattering on the old tiles. He'd seen her zipping up behind Cait. (He realized it might have looked momentarily as if he were about to either propose or serenade the woman, but, ah well.) He picked his youngest daughter up and gave her a scratchy kiss on the cheek. She whispered something into his ear, before lying her head on his shoulder, big eyes on this mysterious stranger her father seemed to know.

"Yes," he said to the little girl, looking at Cait. He wasn't going to help her with his name. Why should he? "She'd like me to tell you her name is Evie."

Rude to this man, yes. Cate could do that. Rude to the daughter? That just seemed mean. She put on a smile and completely changed her demeanor to that of a friendly woman. "Nice to meet you, Evie. My name is Cate. What's your Daddy's name?"

Evie smiled shyly for a second time and buried her face into her father's neck. Noah, in turn, raised his eyebrows, amused by the total change in attitude. The girl mumbled something. Ruby scampered by with a bag of potato chips. (Good. She was alive then.) Moving his eyes from his daughter's tutu to Cait's face, he gave the usual smirk.

Realizing that he wasn't about to get out of the store soon enough to smoke the cigarette he'd withdrawn, he pulled the thing from his mouth and handed it to Evie. She held onto it tightly. "Don't crush it. I don't want to have to tell Mommy I had to leave you at the store. She'd be sad, you know." Again, he moved his attention back to this hallmark of his past. He wiped a thumb across his lips. "Does your subconscious think it necessary to forget all or only some of the people you've slept with? My own is partial to the 'some.'"

Well. That didn't really give her any information, sadly. She'd slept with a lot of people. He could damn well be anyone from Frye Island. And a few guys from the mainland, though she could at least remember their names. Mostly. But it still wasn't ringing a bell. She knew it wasn't David, as she'd run into him earlier and he looked nothing like this man.

"I could give you a list a mile long. But the list that I couldn't give you is probably longer." But honestly! She didn't really think it was an appropriate topic to be discussing in front of a child. "Just tell me your name. I'm not in the mood to play games, you know. Unless you want to tell me some other people you've slept with aside from your--" Cate eyed the ring on his finger. "Wife."

As Cait's eyes landed on his wedding band, Noah followed her gaze. He grinned all the more. He ran his fingers through Evie's unruly, dirty blond hair. She looked much more like Laney than she did him. She was much sweeter than the pair of them combined, however. At least for now. Ruby, on the other hand, was much more his daughter in looks and demeanor - aside from the whole tutu obsession thing. "Eve," Noah turned to his daughter, nudging his shoulder so she lifted her head. She looked up at him. "Tell her my name."

Putting a finger in her mouth, she turned her eyes to Cait. She thought about it. She did. But, in the end, she hid her face again, unable to do it. Noah sighed at her disapprovingly and plucked the cigarette from her grasp. He was slightly surprised that the woman's memory hadn't yet been jogged. But, then again, not everyone was quite as sharp as he was. (He laughed at himself when he thought this.) "I'll give you a hint, then."

Ruby flew around the corner before her father could continue. She gazed up at the redheaded woman in the fancy clothes. "Um," she began as if this lady was slow. "His name is Noah."

A smile snaked it's way across Cate's features. Noah. What a turn of events this was. Here the man she'd been terrified at the prospect of being her child's father, was standing with his own children, clearly being a parent. And not sucking at it. How odd.

"Noah, huh? Well, it looks like I do know you, then." She looked down at the little girl who, now that she thought about it, looked uncannily like Noah, and nodded. "Thank you. And what's your name?" She wanted to ask who their mother was, but decided it wasn't her business. Of course, the girl she used to be would ask anyways, but it showed how much she'd changed to keep her mouth shut.

There was a smile Noah knew. He put a hand on Ruby's head and nodded, to confirm that he was, in fact, who the six year old said he was. She beamed up at him, proud of herself for knowing his name. She looked back at the lady and put her hands on her skinny hips. Still proud, Ruby pointed at herself with her thumb and smiled smugly. "I'm Ruby Roberta Riley."

"I don't think she meant your whole name, Rube," Noah informed his daughter, who stuck her tongue out at him as a response. He just gave her a shrug. Next time, if he wasn't holding Evie, he'd grab that little pink tongue. Then she'd learn to keep it in her mouth. As it was, the girl giggled and scampered off to, Noah assumed, fetch up the aforementioned macaroni. In his usual deadpan manner, he spoke to Cait: "Ah, so I've not been completely forgotten. Well, that's comforting. It was keeping me up at night."

He laughed. (And so did Evie.)

"Nice to meet you, Ruby Roberta Riley. I'm Catherine Teresa Abernathy." And then the girl was scampering off again. Of course, it didn't bother Cate much. She might have worked at a school but she did not care for children. Especially not children that weren't hers. Hell, she didn't even care for children that were hers.

She straightened up. "Am I supposed to apologize for that?" She asked innocently. "I had no idea, obviously, how much I affected your sleep." Cate blinked a few times. "I always thought you slept better than the rest of us." She was, of course, referencing his power.

Abernathy? Noah pretended not to notice the change in name. He assumed she was married now, although no ring shined (shone?) from her finger. He just smiled. "Fucking with other people's heads is much more taxing than some think," he said in response. Of course, in reality, Noah slept fine. He hadn't thought about Cait in.. who knows how long. He just liked to act like a dick - and see how people reacted.

She didn't seem to have changed much, though. (Noah couldn't actually judge, given the length of their interaction had been about five minutes at this point.) Not only had her appearance remained constant, so, it appeared, had her personality. Very interesting.

Vaguely, Noah wondered what had happened in Cait's life for her to have not changed - and for her to be in the City. He felt that he was quite different from the Noah that lived on Frye Island. Yes, there were parts of him (like the part that liked bullshitting other people) that were still there, same as ever, but - he felt different. Perhaps Cait felt different too. Maybe he was more like her than he thought. Shifting his daughter on his hip, Noah bit his lip (he had trouble when he couldn't have a cigarette to quell his oral fixation).

"Are you married too, then?"

Cate nodded as if she understood. She did, sure, but not in the same way. With her new power, she still got to mess with people's free will and in turn, their heads. But it wasn't sleep or dreams or anything like that. "Whatever you say, Noah. I'll have to take your word for it." Her power change was still a secret.

At his question, she raised her eyebrows. It was a common question for those she knew in her past. They weren't used to people changing their last name for any other reason. "Nope. Not married. Not even seeing anyone. I don't have time for it."

Even more interesting. Noah looked at Evie in mock surprise, then back at Cait. "I can't imagine they'd keep you chained to your desk at this school you work at, but, then again, maybe it's a private school." He shrugged, still smiling.

Noah was endlessly amused by everything around him - that much hadn't changed in the nine or so years it had been since he'd left the island. "Or do you mean you've no time, because you're busy prolonging your youth?"

He didn't mean it as a jab. More like a joke. But his humor, as dry as it was, tended to confuse those around him.

Cate glared at him. Boy, she was slowly remembering how much she didn't miss his jokes. "I have no time because I'm still moving into my new apartment, actually. I didn't feel like paying someone to move everything and unpack it, so I'm doing it myself. Not that it's necessarily any of your business. Nor is my personal life, but I understand I volunteered the information and probably instigated your little...whatever it was." She glanced at the child in his arms.

"Your daddy is very outspoken, isn't he?"

Noah nodded, as if to say, 'of course, of course. My bad.' He hitched Evie up, getting a firmer grasp on her as she wriggled in his arms. He smiled at Cait's utterly unimpressed expression. More sincere this time, he offered a shrug. "If you need help, it is part of what I do for a living."

Evie looked levelly at Cait, before deciding to be bashful again. She hid her face, but still responded, her words muffled against Noah's shirt. "We have to be ind...-"

Ruby, as she meandered by with a box of macaroni, spoke knowingly and sagely: "Independent."

Looking from one girl to the other, Noah gave them a look. "Those aren't necessarily the same thing. But, it's true. Independence is important. And, if I recall correctly, you're just as outspoken. Certainly it's not a bad thing." He raised his eyebrows at Cait.

Cate stifled a small laugh. For as asshole-ish as Noah was, his children seemed to be extremely well educated. Or, at the very least, very knowing and worldly. She'd been to her fair share of elementary schools for work and none of the children were like this. She was quite impressed, really. But she'd never say that. Not to Noah, and not in front of the girls. "You're right," she said instead, addressing Ruby. "It's very important to be independent." She smiled warmly and then turned her attention back up.

"You're right. I am. And it's not." Most people commended her for her honesty, though there were a select few who thought she was just genuinely a bitch. And she was, sort of. But oh well. "Who's your wife, then? She from the island?" She moved her fingers back and forth between the children. "Do they...?"

Although Ruby and Evie were destined to be public school attendees, - or perhaps because - Noah felt it was important to firmly impart ideas on them, and spent a good deal of time home from work doing just that. Just like with anything else, he had very strong opinions on the subject. His children, he'd decided long ago, were not going to become the shallow, airheaded adults like so many others. This took a light hand, however. They kids needed to be free to pursue the things they wanted to, while being kept in check. It was something that came surprisingly easy to Noah, who, before his own children, had thought of most kids as obnoxious, bratty monsters.

But, things change. And people.

Ruby smiled happily at Cait in response to the praise. "Yes." She nodded again, adjusting her tutu from where it'd begun to tilt. She then handed her father the macaroni and moved down the cereal aisle to the right. Noah looked at the macaroni - it was shaped like aliens and UFOs - and passed it off to his youngest daughter. She held it to her chest. "I don't know if you'd know her," he replied after a brief pause, turning his gaze from Evie to Cait. "She's from Frye, though. Laney Evans. Natalie's sister, actually." Ruby walked back with some oatmeal. She knew it was Robin's favorite and was proud of herself for being thoughtful. She smiled, then watched the adults interacting with curiosity. Her eyes followed the woman's fingers. Noah gave a half-nod, half-shrug. "We think so. It'd be a miracle if they didn't. But nothing's manifested. So long as neither are telepathic, it'll be fine."

Noah didn't mention that he and Laney had their doubts when it came to Robin, who seemed the most ordinary of children. He was a smart kid, introverted and more interested in science than any nine-year-old should be, but, that was where it ended.
