Who: Ari and Scott What: Shabbat Where: Silverman house When: Friday at 4:30pm Rating: Low?
It was erev Shabbos and everything was almost ready. There was barely five minutes before candles had to be lit as Ari scrambled around the house, turning on a few lights in the house so it wasn't completely dark and they wouldn't be stumbling over one another. Before she headed back to the kitchen, she grabbed two new white candles from the hallway closet to light for the Shabbos meal along with some matches. "Scott, come on," she called out to him. She had no idea where he was in the house or what he was doing but she felt that it was her job at least try to get him to observe the Sabbath like a good Jew. Then again, he wasn't always the most observant but he seemed to be okay with how strict she was sometimes.
Grabbing Toby from the play pen and turning off the television, Ari rushed into the kitchen and strapped him into the high chair. The dinner was already on the table and the loaves of challah were covered. The wine was already uncorked and poured into the kiddush cup. And now, the candles were in their respective spot. Everything was all set, so Ari struck the match and lit the candles. Gently waving her hands three times over the candles in a circular motion and then covering her eyes, she recited the blessing and slightly rocked back and forth. "Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher kideshanu b'mitzvotav vitzuvanu lihadleek ner shel Shabbat." Opening her eyes and seeing the candle light and then watching Toby gaze at the flame, she reached over and placed her hands on his tiny head gently to bless him. "Ye'simcha Elohim k'efraim v'k'menashe. Ye'varech'echa Adonai v'yish'merecha. Ya'er Adonai panayv eleycha vichunecha. Yisa Adonai panayv eleycha, v'yasem l'cha shalom."
