Mary Ann hadn’t stopped crying since she’d found him. It was like the water works had turned on and everyone had abandoned their post. She couldn’t unsee Alan’s room and the blood that had soaked into the carpet. Her mother and father were talking with the police giving statements or something, Mary Ann had been asked to wait in the kitchen. Her hands and knees were still bloodied from checking if Alan was breathing. It was taking everything in her to not disappear completely even as she could feel her tenuous control slipping through the cracks with each tear. This wasn’t supposed to be how today would go. They were supposed to go out for breakfast so she could surprise him with his present having chosen to not go out with him, Toni, and Josie. Now he was dead and Mary Ann couldn’t help but feel like maybe some part of it was her fault.
She looked up when she heard someone calling from the front. Sniffling back several tears Mary Ann cleared her throat to respond. “In the kitchen.” She probably shouldn’t have said anything, but then if it was another of the police officer it would be sort suspicious not to answer wouldn’t it? Taking a deep breath she tried to pull herself together to place the pain and confusion into a box so that she could deal with this. The sooner everyone knew what they needed to know she could fall apart in the privacy of her bedroom.
