Who: Liam / Open
What: Lunchbreak from work
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: Outside the law offices
It only took a small effort to hear what was being discussed by two of the attorneys in a back room of the law offices, and Liam listened to their conversation with perfect clarity as if he was in the same room, instead of all the way outside, across the street, leaning with his shoulders shoved up against the wall opposite the building.
Even if the ability to amplify voices for himself made him aware of the contradiction between what people said to each other when they were together then what they said about the other behind their back, Liam was used to it now and experience stopped him from feeling too discouraged by what he heard. The attorneys were exchanging details about an assault case, weighing up confidential information and arguing over which of the legal assistants were suitable to help them with it, him included. His chances for being selected didn't sound hopeful.
This wasn't the first time he'd listened to the private conversations of those who headed his training, deliberately finding out what areas of work they thought he needed to improve in. Knowing what his bosses wanted usually helped him to keep one step ahead of the others, and hopefully it was going to put him at an advantage for being asked to assist with this case. It was cheating, maybe, but who didn't push the edge to get ahead in the business.
His overcoat rustled as he extracted a cigarette and lighter, tuned out from the sounds and voices directly around him, only listening to those in the building across the street. After storing his lighter in his pocket, he crossed his unoccupied arm over his chest, and teased the cig between his teeth while his eyes firmly focused on the offices again.
