Katie rode the entire way home from the game in silence. The only sound coming from her was the occasional beeping from her phone. Her father glanced over at her once or twice as he drove, if only to make sure she wasn't crying before turning his attention back to the road. There was really nothing he could say now that he hadn't already said back at the gymnasium. And he knew it would only make matters worse if he continued to bring it up.
Katie was glad for this. The only person she wanted to talk to was James. There was something wrong with her. She was losing her edge. Before, she had been the best on the team, but tonight, she had missed nearly every ball coming to her. By inches! Centimeters, even. James was the only person she ever confided in. He knew everything about her and she wasn't scared to tell him anything. He would know the exact thing to say to make her feel better and put it in perspective. She exhaled at the thought, instantly feeling relief when the car pulled into the driveway of their home.
Without more than a 'thanks Dad!', Katie jumped out of the car and ran inside. She headed straight for her big brothers room, where she knew he'd be. She didn't even knock as she pushed open his door and barged in.
