It's too late to apologize. It's too late.
It was just about the perfect day for a tan, Mal decided. It was quite the atrocity when she realized that she had a shitpile of work she still had to do. Mal, however, was resourceful and did not give up that easily. If she wanted to go out and get some rays, then by all means, she was going to do that. It just so happened that she needed to take some rather boring reading material with her. Mal disliked homework with a deep passion. And now that Maribel had graduated and had a full time job, it was harder to get the girl to do very much work when she wasn't even enrolled in Mal's classes. Bugger. Why couldn't she have just failed a few classes? No, she had to be Miss Perfect Suma Cum Whatever and the love of her brother's life. It was enough to drive anyone insane.
Mal tried not to let her thoughts run away with her. She needed to focus on this stupid book. It was a nice enough day that the birds were out singing, and every parent of a child below the age of ten was out with their sqwaking kids running around. Mal wasn't as upset about the noise as she might have been if this were, say, a library for example. It had been her idea to come out here in the first place. And as high as she raised the volume of her headset, she couldn't quite block out the noise. It was either that or be even more distracted by the loud music to not be able to understand what she was reading.
The soccer ball rolled casually toward her. She didn't notice it until it was just about an inch from her leg. It didn't touch her thankfully, or else she would have been quite the annoyed little bumblebee. Instead, she merely glanced down at it and then back up at the person running over to fetch it from her. If they thought she was going to pick up that grass-covered ball and toss it back, they were sadly mistaken.
