Anxiety. That was what the doctors had said was wrong with her. Not that she believed them much, at least not until she got in to see Dr. Anderson at some point. He would believe her, that she was just upset about not going back to school. Honestly, after everything she had been through and was now finally starting to reach the clear zone, she was going to be depressed? It didn't make any sense to her or to anyone with half a brain. They just wanted her drugged, and not her parents either. They had just been convinced that a few nights of decent sleep would do her well. Boy, were they wrong.
The sleeping pills were strong. Penny wouldn't realize just how strong until the next day, but she was out like a light the second she hit the pillow. All her anxiety vanished just as easily, though the meds had other side effects the doctors hadn't exactly known about. They slowly began to lure Penny's subconscious mind out of hiding, calmed her so much that she actually felt safe even within the confines of her own mind. She was well aware that she wasn't safe anywhere, but the meds relaxed her, put her mind at ease. And Penny began to dream of everything that floated around in the back of that mind of hers.
"That headline is ridiculous," Penny said into her phone. How it was working inside the elevator was a miracle. Goes to show just how a little extra money on a decent cell phone plan went a long way. She twirled her finger around a wavy strand of brown hair as she chewed on a strawberry flavored bubble gum. "Get rid of it before the latte in my stomach decides to resurface." Her phone clicked off with an annoyed press of her finger, and she sighed. It was tough being the star reporter on the island. Everyone wanted a piece of you.
The elevator was officially going at a turtle's pace just as it stopped a few floors below where she was to get off. A young man entered, and Penny rolled her eyes, pretending to tap away at her phone. This was the problem with working in a public place. It was open to the public. "I guess they're letting just about anyone in here these days," she muttered just loud enough for him to hear her. It was bad enough that she had to work with the guy, did she have to see him on a regular basis? And in an elevator of all places. Talk about close encounters.
