Who: Emily then Charles
What: Emily's powers go nuts and almost hurricane!!
When: backdated, Monday, August 22, late morning
Where: Emily's room then outside in the park
Rating: Low/Medium

Emily had had a fairly relaxing weekend, having work off was always nice. Also wonders of wonders she had tried to make it rain last Friday because it honestly was way too hot and...nothing happened. Had it gone away because she had suppressed it so much. While it first was a little scary, she ended up feeling thrilled. While she had a firm control over her powers, she still had to be mindful about it. But now...it seemed like it was one more thing that she didn't have to worry about. She woke up that morning with a smile on her face as she looked at the sun outside her window then down to Irulan who was curled up at her side.

She gave a little giggle and was about to wake Irulan up gently when something rushed through her. And it wasn't a good kind of rush. She shot to a sitting position in her bed causing Irulan to spring to attention. Emily's whole body trembled as another rush ran through her. She couldn't explain it, it wasn't like a rush of emotions or anything it felt like a rush of...power. Her eyes widened in terror, it couldn't be, no...it couldn't be back. She turned to glance out the window and let out a little cry of surprise as a much more powerful rush ran through her. She opened her eyes and saw some clouds forming. Her powers were back, not only were they back, they were back with a vengeance. Emily knew how to control her powers when they were somewhat muted and only had to focus when it was a little stronger. But this...this was like nothing she had ever felt before. A horrifying thought occurred to her...if she cause a hurricane with her normal powers, what kind of horror would this cause. A level two nearly tore the island apart, the way she was feeling now could cause something much worse. She couldn't...no...she wouldn't let that happen again. She pulled a pair of jeans, a tank top and a hoodie on. She posted a message on the message boards to everyone, warning them to stay inside and she reassured those who knew about her power to not worry, that she was going to fix this.

From her experience with her power she felt she had to get into the middle of it to focus enough to stop it. She raced out of her house and the rain had already started to fall, getting heavier by the minute. The wind started picking up as well as she approached a clearing in the park. Emily looked up to the swirling clouds and saw a flash of lightning closely followed by a crack of thunder. While being outside in a thunderstorm wasn't a good idea, Emily knew that, like the last hurricane, she wouldn't get hurt. Some how subconsciously her powers worked to keep her safe. She was already drenched from the rain and shook slightly from the cold. No, discomfort aside she had to do this. She swore she would never let her power hurt anyone ever again. She shut her eyes and focused repeating a mantra in her head, 'I control the power it does not control me.'

She imagined the rushing she felt through her slowly traveling out of her down her arms and she almost felt it draining out of her. However, her body kept pulsing that searing power through her. 'I control this, I am the one in control, you don't control me, I have this amazingly strong power, so that means I'm stronger, I won't let it hurt anyone ever again.' She steeled her resolve even harder and tried to focus on the storm now. Emily felt a particularly strong pulse and she felt a warmth spread through her. Anyone who saw her would see that her eyes were now white and her hair was flying around her in the wind.

The feeling was completely new, she felt everything, she had almost become one with the storm. She sensed every rain drop, every gust of wind, ever strike of lightning, every roar of thunder. She smelt the wet grass and her body felt overly sensitized. Emily was totally blank as she almost felt the clouds move with her every breath. In a low voice she then said aloud, "I made you, you are my creation. I am the one you obey and I am telling you to stop...you are done. I control you, you will no longer control me." The thunder quieted and the rain became lighter until is stopped. The wind turned back into a warm summer breeze as the clouds dissipated. Emily felt herself separate form the storm and return to her body. She blinked her eyes returning to green. The power left her in one big rush feeling her drained. She smiled as the sun came out and she sunk to her knees then fell to her side completely spent.

Between the predictions that had been made, the sudden alert to what his daughter had written, and past experience, it didn't take any time for Charles to surmise what was happening outside the town hall where he had been discussing business with a fellow councilman. Potentially, what was happening to the entire island. After the blackout of powers, he'd desired for a swift and ultimately peaceful restoration of normality - or what passed as such around there - but he hadn't counted on it, being far too much off a pragmatist to idly hope.

That, however, didn't make him less inclined to immediately excuse himself and make his way outside. A quick call to Bethany back at the house advised him of which direction to head in. The rain barely lasted barely another half-minute before it eased, leaving barely a spot on his suit untouched by water, but not drenched. Uncomfortable, yet not the worst of his concerns at that juncture.

Finding Emily collapsed onto her side, his throat tightening in a way he would never admit, he crouched down and wrapped his hands around her shoulders, carefully turning her over onto her back to assess the severity of her state.

Emily was just too exhausted to move. She was wet and cold and all she wanted to do was be at home warm in her bed. Stopping such a powerful storm was hard and that little kick of power she had was both frightening and...thrilling at the same time. Being that in control was an amazing feeling. It wasn't like she made the weather, but she was the weather.

She shut her eyes in a little groan when she felt someone turn her over. Why couldn't everyone just leave her be, she was tired, she just wanted to sleep. Her vision was still blurry when she opened her eyes just slightly. Emily couldn't place the figure, but her best guess it was Evan, he probably didn't listen to her and came out to make sure she was okay. He hated when she put herself in situations like this. But she was right, and she stopped it. A weak smile came to her face and said just above a whisper,

"I stopped it."

"Good, good..." Speaking briefly and low as he searchingly cut his eyes across her, he could debate the extent of her control and how she'd handled it at a later time, when she was somewhere warm and dry and out of earshot. He tried hard to ignore the fact that in a few minutes, perhaps a little less, Emily was not going to be smiling at him. She would not be talking to him, least of all about what she'd just done. And she would definitely not let him know when she started to feel better or worse.

He focused on checking her over instead. There didn't appear to be any injuries beyond sheer exhaustion, which wasn't a great surprise to him. If she was prone to be damaged by her own ability, he suspected she'd have been singed to a crisp by lightning long ago. All the children seemed to have a natural immunity to their own effects, built into their genetic make-up, somehow. Under the circumstances, it was a particular relief.

He decided that calling for further assistance was both unnecessary and more time-consuming, so he opted to do this by himself. There was nothing now to prevent him from securing an arm around the back of Emily's slight frame and propping her up, prepared to lift her the rest of the way if needed. He didn't expect for her to willingly accept his help to get home, but this time he didn't provide the choice.

Emily barely registered him responding to her, her mind was still fuzzy from exhaustion, so much that she didn't know she was being cared over by her father. The man she said she would never trust, the person she tried hard to never speak to.

She groaned when she felt him moving her to sit up. Her head lolled back as she said in a slight whine, "I'm so tired, why can't I just stay here, I don't want to move." Truthfully she didn't want to stay there she was wet and cold and the ground wasn't very soft, but at that moment her exhaustion was too strong to make her care about where she was sleeping, only that she was able to sleep. She moved her head to rest on his shoulder and slung her other arm around his shoulders and nuzzled into his shoulder slightly.

His response to the arm flung around his shoulder was to realize that Emily's senses were, beyond a shadow of a doubt, extremely clouded. There was little point in reflecting upon the various reasons why it wasn't ideal to sleep on damp festering ground whilst soaking wet, because she was in no state of mind to hear them, much less process them. The reality was that it was out of the question to stay hunched down there until she was in a state to walk.

He was known by many to be crushing and uncompromising, but there were other sides that did not often show themselves except to those who held a place in his regard. While it was not his way to show outwardly what was inside of him, he didn't shirk away from the concern that drove him to do precisely what she needed him to right then. To that end, he slid his other arm under her knees, angling her against him just enough to lift her up with him as he stood. She didn't feel the way he anticipated she would, and he didn't know why this was so, except that it had been a long time since he had been in the situation to hold any of his children.

The thought to check on Evan slid into his mind while he turned and headed back in the direction of the house. That, too, needed to wait until his hands were free. He may not have been satisfied that Emily had permitted her ability to get out of hand in the first place, but she did need tending.

Emily felt herself being lifted off the ground and her weight settled against the warm figure holding her. It felt strange being in this person's arms, not something she was used to as if it was Evan. It there was a little glimmer of familiarity being in this person's arms. She recognized it...but only barely. Like a distant memory, something she hadn't felt in a long time. Those thoughts were swirling around in her head and had she been more coherent she probably would have figured it out pretty quick that is wasn't Evan who was carrying her but her father.

Once coming to that realization she would shoot out of his arms as fast as she could...thinking that he had something horrible planned. However, she would also be shocked that her father would pick up her soaking wet figure and hold her in his arms against one of his ridiculously priced suits. The water was probably staining it beyond repair and normally he would never risk something like that...but he didn't care when it came to making sure she was safe...that she was okay.

But those thoughts were no where close to rooting themselves in her mind causing her to react. All she did was wrap her arms a bit tighter around the figure in a hug. In her mind this was still her brother and in a sleepy whisper she said,

"Thank you for coming for me, you're the only one who makes me feel safe."

Clearly, he was not who she currently thought he was. While this didn't sit well with him, more so the longer it went on, it was for the best. He had no wish to see her erupt into distress, or start another argument, not least because she currently wasn't in a position to walk away from it. He could imagine what she'd say if she woke up now, although exactly where along the line she'd decided he'd be content to leave her passed out in the freezing wet dirt outside, he didn't know. He attempted to shut out that thought with ruthless efficiency, and prevented himself from saying anything else to her just yet. No, there was no need to stir Emily from her delusion if it was giving her comfort, and she would not have to find out any differently from him.

The door was already unlocked when they arrived, and Bethany wasn't too far behind it, with a worried exclamation at the sight of Emily. His signal to silence her came in the form of a slight narrowing of his eyes. To her credit, after the mild panic which would no doubt later turn into accusations that this was somehow his fault, she hastily told him she'd put some bath towels in the living room.

He carried Emily into there and toward the couch, and shifted his shoulder to give her the proper support as he leaned down and set her onto the cushions, slowly, so as not to jostle her.

Emily no longer felt the chill from the gentle wind outside and warmth take it's place. They were inside, she was safe and she let out a little sigh. When the figure placed her down on the couch she nuzzled the cushions, now she could rest. Then something stirred her from almost sleep. A whimper...and animal whimper. She heard the soft padding of paws down some stairs and over to her. She felt something nuzzled against her hand and whimper slightly. Emily knew that sound, knew the feel of that fur.

"Irulan?" Emily opened her eyes to see her precious puppy. Why was Irulan over at Evan's. She then looked past Irulan to see the room. This wasn't Evan's apartment, this was her house. Why would Evan bring her here? She then looked up to see her father standing there. His suit was wet, then everything clicked. The subtle familiarity of his arms, that he didn't speak much to her,

"You?" Emily shook her head only slightly, not really enough to notice. The realization that her father had been the one to find her, carry her back here stunned her. Did he...care? She thought he hated her. He never did anything without a motive, but...he could have gotten someone else, why did he do it himself? She stared at him with a cautious confused look on her face and simply asked,

"Why?"

Having been in the act of reaching for one of the bath towels Bethany had rushed down, Charles didn't take long to register and identify the sense of relief that filled him when Emily was coherent enough to address the dog.

The next question of why spoke volumes, on many levels, but they were too many to be assailed at once. Why had he been there, why was he there now, why him and not Evan, or any other question he couldn't be absolutely certain she asking him? It had become increasingly difficult to know what was going through her mind. She too often got far more carried away within herself than her brother ever did. But she was still his daughter, who was on his mind just as much as his son. His only girl. Even if his opposite in every way.

A flicker of genuine unease briefly tarnished his eyes, though there was not enough in his voice to betray this when he stated, "You might have got hurt."

Emily thought she saw something in his eyes, but it was gone before she could identify it. She could have gotten hurt? She spoke aloud what was running through her head,

"Why would you care? I'm just my mother's tool remember? I thought I was just some constant annoyance in your life?" Sure he had only said that once when she accidentally spilled a mug of hot coffee on him, but it had still hurt and tears formed behind her eyes as he voice broke slightly at the end of the statement.

As he unfolded the towel, it took him a moment to recall any time he'd said such a damning thing, but he got there after a matter of seconds - and it only took him so long because that one time had been nothing more significant to him than a fleeting loss of temper. Well. That had been during a particularly bad evening, after an afternoon spent on the phone with the nation's Science Advisor, with whom the conversation had escalated until he sharply advised the so-called expert to reassess whether he really had a place in an Administration committed to science. It had not been a good time to deal with any overzealous accidents.

"Seventeen years makes you far more than anyone's tool." Especially not her mother's, but he refrained from finishing the sentence out loud. Now, more than ever, it hit uncomfortably too close to home. The waver in Emily's voice added to the feeling.

"You're still tired," he observed, pointedly draping the towel around her shoulders for her to use on her hair. "Perhaps you should stop thinking about the whys, and consider for a moment that arguing with me might not be the best thing for you right now."

Emily felt her hurt and anger melt at his words. He was being so...gentle with her. A word that she was sure no one ever used when talking about him. He was gruff and firm and serious. But being gentle and caring for his daughter. She wouldn't believe it had she not been the recipient of said gentleness.

Emily started to use the towel on her hair once he draped it around her shoulders. "You're right I guess. I think I'm going to take a hot shower and lay down. I'm beat..." she paused as she mulled over something. She had already said enough in regards to her powers so she guess her dad knew what she could do, "that was a tough one to stop...also I guess I tapped into something when stopping it. It's powerful...but really draining. I need to practice to make sure it doesn't happen again. Someone might not be there next time." She met his eyes and gave a small smile before standing up and making her way towards the stairs, Irulan close on her heels.
