Evan's attitude toward the family business had been... concerning, as of late.
Granted, a life outside of work had its own importance, but it was all a matter of management. Charles was not convinced, at this juncture, that Evan's decision to expand the staff was a necessity, instead of a disappointing indication of his reluctance to handle the workload. The choices on how the place was run had been entrusted to him, not so he could frivolously do whatever he wanted with them, but rather in the hope that he would display the aptitude to make the right ones.
Well. The dismissive complaints Evan had given to Bethany - Bethany - but not him, had left Charles in no doubt that a little discussion was now due. The bit about his opinion having been described as 'some shit' would be especially colorful.
So after pulling up the car outside Elwood Rocks, there was no hesitation in Charles' movement as he tidied his keys into his pocket and made short work of crossing the distance to the door, stepping inside, and proceeding further into the building with the same sense of entitlement. There was a low, but constant hum of activity in the background. The 'warm-ups', the discussion, the ceaseless chatter that always accompanied groups of friends - he was aware of it all, but he showed no sign of acknowledgment, betrayed no sense of greeting. Those were instincts tied to self-consciousness, and he wasted precious little of that on the gym's usual clientele.
He headed for the office, a sensible place to try first, not knowing precisely where Evan would be. He hadn't given any prior notice that he was going to drop by. Better to just do so than to announce it first. Better not to give that choice. Because that choice would possibly see Evan conveniently walking out before he accepted his father's advice. Part of Charles asserted that his son was old enough to be beyond actually needing to stay around for his advice. The other part dissented.
Although. He did not focus hard enough to find out why it did not feel right that Evan might want to avoid him.
