Who: Rosie & OPEN
What: Late to class
Where: HS Hallway
When: 6/1
Rating: G

It was lovely that spring and summer were finally here. But with spring, comes rain and with rain, comes wet hallways. So when you're rushing to class and you're already late because your alarm clock never went off at the time it was supposed to, you're bound to have a slippery surprise. Usually Roz didn't care if she was on time to class or ten minutes late but that was until she had been told that if she was late one more time to class, she'd have a weeks worth the detentions.

Naturally, she made every possible effort to get to class on time but that was to no avail. She had already played hookie, claiming she was 'sick' the other day. But her parents were already at work and her brother had left for school as well, so no one would be able to call in to the high school for her and get her out of school one more day. Rather than facing her fate in detention though, Rosie made an effort to get to class as soon as possible to possibly get in the good graces of her first teacher of the day.

'Only ten minutes late. Not bad,' she thought to herself as she raced down through the entrance of the school and down to her locker. Rose didn't even bother to stop at her locker, rather she ran straight to class, her wet shoes squeaking all the way down the hall. That is, until the sound of Roz slipping and sliding echoed down the hall, accompanied by her crashing to the floor in a tangled mess. Her books splayed across the floor and everything about her was disheveled, not to mention her pants were now wet from the rain.

Roz wanted to be frustrated about what happened but she couldn't help laugh at the irony and how funny it probably looked as she slid down the hallway like it was a giant Slip'N'Slide minus the soap. Rosie sat there for a moment just laughing at herself before she reached over and started to pick up the books that had spilled out of her book bag.

Calvin hated rain. He hated the sound of it on the roof, he hated the feel of wetness on his skin, he hated the smell of moisture in the air, he hated the way shoes squeaked on the floor when they were wet, he hated rain. He'd waited longer than he should staring out the rain-blurred window of his home, hoping for a break, but the water kept falling out of the sky and finally he'd given up and headed out into it.

He arrived at school wet and disgruntled and late, but that didn't make him hurry. He usually managed to get to school on time, so he wasn't too worried about a solitary tardy. He was at his locker exchanging books when he heard an unexpected sound and looked up in time to see Roz slipping and sliding down the hall.

Sheer surprise forced a laugh out of him. Well, she was laughing too, and it was such a perfect fall. He laughed a little more, not loudly but not holding back either, enjoying the unexpected moment of lightness in the dreary rainy day even though it was at Roz's expense.

Then, maybe a bit abashed, he slammed his locker shut and ducked to pick up a couple of papers -- wet, he grimaced -- that had fallen from her backpack in his direction. Holding the wet papers out away from him, he headed toward her. "You alright?" he asked, though he was pretty sure she wouldn't have been laughing like that if she was really hurt.

Rosie hadn't noticed anyone else is the hallway. Most people were always on time and if they weren't, they tended to only be a few minutes late - not ten minutes and counting. So when she heard someone laughing with her, she turned to see who it was, still smiling and giggling a little. She knew who Calvin was but she wasn't really good friends with him; he seemed good natured enough though.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," Roz said with a smile as she tossed her hair out of her face. "I don't think those will be though." She grimaced a little as she took the wet papers from Calvin and piled them in with the rest of her crumpled assignments and wet schoolbooks. Stuffing it all into her book bag, Rosie stood up and started to straighten her clothes out.

"So why are you late?" Roz was only teasing as she asked, hoping that maybe she had just found someone to play hookie with considering how late they both were already. "Busy dancing in the rain, I suspect?" She giggled and took off her jacket, shaking it out in hopes of drying it a little and getting some of the dirt off of it since her clothes had just acted as a giant mop for the school floor and with water came dirt and hair naturally.

Calvin couldn't help but smile back at Roz, she was such a cheerful person, and it was a relief to get rid of the wet papers: out of sight out of mind, though there were plenty of other reminders of the rain.

"You couldn't be more wrong, I hate rain," he said, unable to keep the disgruntled note out of his voice, where it mixed strangely with the light amusement he was trying to project. In for a penny: "There's nothing worse than a rainy day," he complained.

In no hurry to get to class, he reversed the question with a baffled smirk. "Is that why you're late? Dancing?" He stepped back from the shaking jacket, though it didn't look very effective.

Roz was taken aback slightly by the tone of Calvin's voice and how much he seemed to dislike the rain. "Why? It's only water. It doesn't hurt." Perhaps a half smile would encourage him to like it a little more? Highly unlikely but Rosie had no reason to frown unless knowing she was going to have a weeks worth the detentions now counted. Even at that though, she didn't mind - there were usually some interesting characters in detention. "I could think of things that are worse than the rain, princess," she joked, stifling a giggle.

"Not today. I wish I had been though. It would have at least made the detentions worth it." She shrugged, sighing when she realized that the dirt and hair weren't budging from her jacket. "So much for that," Roz muttered under her breath as she tossed her jacket into her backpack with the rest of the wet belongings.

Eyeing the clock on the wall behind Calvin, Rosie sighed and looked back at him. "You actually gonna go to class?" Although it sounded like she was encouraging him to go, that was actually Roz's way of asking Calvin if he wanted to skip school with her. She was already a mess and class didn't seem worth it to go anymore considering she was probably going to go back to sleep or doodle on her notepads. Today was already dreary from the rain and she was late on top of it - why not go smoke or go for a hike to spruce up the day?

"Because the last thing the world needs is more gloomy," Calvin said ungrammatically, without really pausing to think about what he was saying. Being called princess didn't improve his mood any either. "Just look at it--" he pointed back toward the door, where the rain hadn't slackened any. "You can't get away from it." He felt that way about a lot of things lately, like he'd just like to get away, which intensified his feelings about rain.

He wrinkled his nose, either at dancing in the rain or detentions -- or both. "It's not too late," he said nevertheless, completely willing to encourage rule breaking. But he took Roz's question as encouragement to go to class, however she meant it. "Yeah," he said, twisting back to look at the clock with a sigh. "Can't hang out in the hallway forever." They'd been lucky so far, but someone would come along and notice and shoo them to class eventually.

"Well aren't you just a bucket of rainbows," Roz said, rolling her eyes and laughing. She was tempted to ask who shit on his parade but she refrained, thinking it would only add insult to injury with the princess comment already out there. If he was acting this way about the rain alone, he most likely wouldn't take kindly to things like that and Roz was in no mood to deal with drama today. Or any day, really. "If you can't get away from it, embrace it. Run through the rain in your underpants.. Sing and dance beneath your umbrella.. Enjoy it." She shrugged as if running around in your underwear in the rain was a completely normal thing to do, not phased by her delicate choice of wording.

Rosie eyed the clock and watched as it kept ticking away while listening to what Calvin was saying. He was such a drag and so proper about getting to class and clearly he was in need of some fun. And it was the end of the school year - who wanted to go to class anyways? "Yeah, I guess not," she said as she sighed and smiled, looking both ways down the hall to make sure no one was there to see either of them.

"Suppose we'll just have to bust out of here then.." Roz spoke as though it was a chore to get out of school but quickly grinned from ear to ear and held out her hand to Calvin. "Come on. Lets get out of here. You can use my jacket as an umbrella if you need it, princess."

"No, that would be you," Calvin said grumpily. Dance and sing? "But if you want to dance in your underwear I'll watch," he conceded with a sly smile. What guy wouldn't?

He might have let her drag him along, because class was looking worse all the time, almost worse than rain, but the "princess" comment again was just too much. He ignored her hand and glanced back at the clock. "I'm glad you weren't hurt by that fall," he said, hiding behind politeness. "You'd better hurry." He started walking in the opposite direction.

Roz laughed at Calvin's comment and lightly shoved him. "Typical guy," she said, rolling her eyes and smirking. If it wasn't a cold rain, she'd probably strip down and run through the rain naked with him but not today. It may be June 1st but summer weather hadn't come just yet.

When she saw that Calvin wasn't taking her hand, Roz furrowed her brow and let it drop to her side. "Oh.. um, thanks?" She wasn't really sure how to respond because of the sudden shift in the way he stopped talking about leaving with her. Ignoring how curt Calvin was being, she insisted, "You really don't want to come?" She pouted a little though he wouldn't have seen it because he had already started walking away. Roz wasn't one to insist on people joining her nor was she the type to really care about offending anyone but she had nowhere to be and a partner in crime.

"It's raining," Calvin complained and explained, turning around and walking backwards so he wouldn't have to raise his voice too much, but putting all his annoyance into that one word. "I hate rain," he added, because she might not have figured that out by now.

"And I don't like being called princess," he added in a more clipped tone -- it wasn't a long standing dislike so it didn't get anything like the annoyance the rain did, but it did grate. "You go have fun." He turned back around and continued on his way.

"You're such a party pooper," Rosie muttered under her breath as she listened to Calvin go on about how much he hated the weather. If he hated the rain this much, he should have just stayed home and under the covers.

"It was a joke, you realize?" Roz furrowed her brow, a little shocked that Calvin couldn't even take a joke. Rather than saying anything more, she just shook her head in disapproval and started walking away. Before she got half way to the door, Rosie looked back over her shoulder at Calvin and called out, "You need it more than I do," and kept walking.
