Who: Sam and Mia
What: First date!!!
Where: the Monroe house for dinner
When: Backdated to Friday night
Rating: TBD probs PG-13 for language and whatnot?
Status: Incomplete

This was nice. Being sure of something was really nice. In the midst of all the chaos of the past few months, and the fact that he was about to graduate high school looming over his head, Sam was relieved to be feeling like himself again. The fact that he was getting a date with a really pretty girl in the bargain was an added perk, to be sure. He wanted to be sure that their evening went off without a hitch, but he wasn't too stressed about it. His mother had taught him everything he knew about cooking, and while he wasn't nearly as passionate about it as she was, he was passable in the kitchen. He had to be when she worked late nights. He and his older brother had grown sick of canned soup and mac and cheese ages ago. As soon as they were old enough to hold a knife and know better than to hurt themselves, they'd been enrolled in Mrs. Monroe's private cooking school.

But he wasn't making anything fancy. Just a salad of mixed greens, raspberries and goat cheese with some herb-rubbed chicken and pasta in a cream sauce. Alright. So kind of fancy for a high school boy. But it hadn't taken him long to prepare, and by the time the chicken was ready for the broiler, and the sauce was on the back burner with the cover on and the heat off, he had just enough time to run over to the Bailey residence and pick up his date. He brushed off any crumbs, slipped on some sneakers and hurried the short walk (as if anything on the island was a long walk from point A to point B) to pick up Mia. He knocked on the door and stuffed his hands into his jean pockets to keep from fidgeting impatiently.

Mia was giddy. Sure, she'd had a date for prom, but that had hardly counted, in her opinion, as a date. Borrowing your parents' credit card to take a girl out to eat with a group of friends and dance a few times just didn't make the cut. She hadn't been on a real date since Tino, and even then, they didn't exactly do much as far as dates were concerned, and he had definitely never cooked for her.

After agonizing over her appearance for a ridiculous amount of time, Mia had only just decided upon her denim skirt (short and cute, not trying too hard) when she heard the knock at the door. One last bit of fidgeting with her hair had her sprinting down the stairs before anyone else could answer it. "I GOT IT!"

She had to take a moment to gather herself and readjust her hair once she reached the door before she pulled it open. "Hi," she breathed, unable to keep back a smile at the sight of him. "I'd ask you in, but, you know, they're busy and stuff." Read: I don't want to get embarrassed, so let's go! "Ready?"

Sam's face broke into a grin when she flung open the door. She looked great. "Hi," he replied, "I would've driven over but my car is all weird. It's nice out though." He shrugged sheepishly.

"I'm ready. I kinda left the oven on, but we've got some time." His brother was home if the timer went off. He had enough sense to know what to do if he heard a kitchen timer, after all.

Mia was suddenly very glad she had opted for flat sandals over wedges. She could have walked in them, sure, but she wouldn't have enjoyed it very much. "Don't worry. It's fine. A walk sounds nice." And romantic, even if it was for more practical reasons than she liked to attribute it to.

Shouldering her small bag, she stepped outside, shutting the door behind her. "So, what did you cook? Is it something exciting?"

Sam gestured for her to lead the way toward the street. He kept his hands in his pockets, not really sure what to do with them, especially if he started fidgeting again. "Oh good. Sorry, I've got it all taken apart and stuff right now." The garage was kind of a mess at the moment, to be sure.

"Nah, nothing crazy. Just some salad, and some pasta. No big." He shrugged, already kind of embarrassed he'd pulled out the big guns. Truthfully, they could've gone out. He made a decent amount of money, and didn't have much to spend it on, seeing as he wasn't exactly going off the island for college. But he liked cooking for people, and it would be nice to test it out on someone who wasn't family.

The corner of Mia's lips quirked up at the notion of Sam tinkering with his car. She liked the image. Maybe she was silly for it, but she liked when guys did stereotypical guy things, like fixing up their cars or yelling at their TV screen when an intense football game was on. "Sam Monroe,: chef, athlete, mechanic. Is there anything you can't do?"

Mia was, quite frankly, glad to hear he hadn't gone for anything exotic or complicated. It wasn't that she didn't like trying new things, but this was a teenage boy doing the cooking, which meant it tended to be better to err on the cautious side of things. "Sounds nice."

"Um... I can't... Play piano?" He offered, there were a great many things he couldn't do. He just couldn't think of them all at the moment. It was much nicer to hear Mia list off his accomplishments anyway. "I should make more tee shirts. That one might be a better advertizement." He teased, giving her a little nudge with his shoulder as they walked.

Inwardly, Sam breathed a sigh of relief. He had been terribly nervous about cooking for her, after she'd offered. Once he'd got going it had been okay, but coming up with a menu that was pretty neutral and easy had been hard. She hadn't mentioned that he absolutely couldn't feed her x, y or z, but the thought that he might screw up had definitely been at the back of his mind. "Yeah? I hope so."

Mia let out a laugh. It didn't exactly put a dent in his appeal. Sure, musicians were cute, but Mia was much more likely to run off with the drummer than the keyboard player. "Well, nobody's perfect, are they?" She gave him a nudge in return, smirking slightly to herself. She liked that he was referencing that evening at the party. It meant he wasn't drunk enough for it not to have stuck with him as much as it had her.

"Come on, Sam. I'm not that hard to impress."

"Not me anyway." Sam shrugged, "I think it would be kind of boring if we all were." The spice of life would be decidedly bland if everyone was perfect.

"You never know. Everyone eats, but not everyone eats the same stuff." He'd seen enough shows on the travel channel to know that there were plenty of sinister things out there that would never make it to his fork if he had anything to do about it.

Mia wouldn't mind being perfect, to be one of those girls with the perfect body, perfect clothes, perfect hair, but she managed to refrain from saying so. "Yeah, for sure."

He had a point. Mia tended not to like much heavy food (namely because it meant it had lots of calories and she was nothing if not a chronic calorie-counter). "Well, I promise to pretend to like it if I don't," she told him with a giggle.

She quirked a brow at his answer. "Yeah? Well, maybe I'll surprise you tonight, then," she said. It didn't look like it would be entirely difficult, honestly.

Sam's eyebrows shot up at her response, "Really now? I don't know if that'll work now that you've told me." He pointed out.

Reluctantly, he pushed away from the counter again, dumped the collinder of pasta into the pot of sauce, tossed it and separated it onto two plates, delicately laying the slices of chicken on top. He grabbed the two plates of salad from the fridge where he'd left them chilling and carried it all to the dining room table, waiter style and jerked his head to indicate that she should follow. "Dinner's ready."

"Oh, don't worry. I have my ways." She smirked slightly, before he had to attend to dinner, which Mia honestly might have forgotten about had it not smelled so nice in the kitchen.

Her face brightened at the sight of a salad that surpassed lettuce and croutons. Mia was a salad girl (big shocker there). She followed him to the dining room, settling herself into one of the chairs. "This looks great, Sam." She was waiting for him to sit before she tried anything.

"I guess I'll just have to wait and see."

Honestly, Sam was about to forget about dinner after the whole cleavage situation, but he managed to pull himself together long enough to get dinner on the table and sit down across from her. He flushed again just a little when she complimented the food. "Thanks. Hope it turned out alright," he grinned.

Mia started with the salad first, something she was sure would be difficult to mess up, and took a dainty bite. She tossed him a thumbs up of approval as she chewed.

(ooc: i feel awesome about it! :D)

Dinner was in fact, delicious.

Soon it was time to clear the table, and even after he'd gotten rid of the dishes (by piling them into the sink to do later, such a boy thing to do) there was definitely quite a bit of time until the movie. He apparently hadn't been very good at timing everything. But no matter.

"So, did you want the tour?"

Mia pretended not to notice that he hadn't done anything with the dishes. After all, she wasn't exactly keen on helping him clean them, either so who was she to complain?

With a full stomach, she rose out of her chair and nodded. "Yeah, I'd love that, actually." She was curious about him. Despite being in the same school for three years, she knew little about the boy who had asked her to dinner.

Sam grinned, "Sweet, alright. Uh, obviously this is the kitchen, and you've seen the dining room so... Garage?"

He led her out the kitchen door to the garage, "This way you can see my car." Once he stepped into the garage, it was probably more than a little obvious that he was kind of giddy. In the middle of the room sat--in a state of some disrepair--a black Jeep Wrangler that was probably a good thirty years old, and then some. It'd been his father's when he was young, and Sam had been taking care of it for as long as he'd been able to handle a wrench. Despite being partially taken apart, it was in relatively good condition. It was clean, and the paint was actually quite new.

Mia couldn't help but let out a soft giggle as she thought about the secret he was talking about. That night had been a good one. "Well, for the record, I didn't pick up that secret from your room," she assured him.

At his compliment, she looked dubious. "Yeah, whatever. But thanks for the ego boost, I suppose." She nudged him gently with her shoulder.

"I didn't think so. If it was that easy to figure out, I think more people might have caught on," he pointed out. "So if it wasn't that, then... What'd you find out?" Maybe he was a little curious. But who wasn't curious to know what other people thought about them? Even just a little bit.

"You're very welcome. But really, they're great stick figures. I don't think I could do any better." He attempted a straight face. There wasn't anything wrong with them, per se, but that dubious look she gave him wasn't making keeping from laughing very easy.

Mia grinned at him. "Oh, you know, the usual. You're a boy, so you're a little messy, which is fine. You made your bed, though, which is actually kind of nice. I figure that plus your neatly folded clothes means you aren't as dirty as you could be. And you've got that stack of car magazines, which means you probably know more about cars than most guys claim to, but I guessed that from your garage anyway. Then the usual posters, but you have your artwork up there, too. I figure that means you're proud of what you do, but... maybe too shy to show it off to anyone you're not close to." She eyed him. "Probably, anyway."

"Wow." Sam's eyebrows shot up. She'd hit the nail on the head. "You got all that from being in my room?" He gave her a look of mock skepticism, "Are you psychic or something? Or stalking me?" He gave her a small nudge to let her know that he was only teasing.

She swatted his shoulder at the notion. "Excuse me, Sam Monroe. I don't stalk anyone, thanks." Although she had totally facebook creeped on Tino after they'd broken up for a long time. "Most of it was common sense." The art part she wasn't entirely sure about, but obviously she'd been right.
