"I'm having a wonderful day," Calvin said, more out of desire than out of truth. He felt a little unbalanced, maybe because of the vision earlier. He wasn't sure what to expect out of anything, which might be why he was so sensitive to Katie's actions. When she sighed, he noticed immediately. "Is something wrong?" he asked quickly, standing over her. But on second thought something being wrong wasn't the pattern he wanted to encourage.
"Oh, hey, I brought you something," he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a plastic easter egg. He held it toward Katie, smiling a little too much for this to be quite as inconsequential as it looked. Inside, nestled in a bed of sand, was a tiny spiral shell, almost exactly the size and shape of a perfect matching pair they'd found one perfect golden day last fall on the beach together. The only difference was that this one was pure white -- scoured of all color somehow. "Silly, but it made me think about you, so I thought you should have it," Calvin said, watching her closely to see if she'd remember that day like he remembered.
