Who: Jacen and Mia
What: It's Mia Monday! Day One of Annie & Jacen's WEEK FROM HELL!
When: Monday in the morning
Where: High School
Rating: Low

Jacen hadn't ever really known what it was like to have a family. The Allens had never once sat together at the table to share a meal. They didn't know the meaning of breakfast, lunch or dinner. Food was just randomly passed out or picked up on their way out the door or back up to their rooms. There was no ceremonial packing of the lunches in the morning or no "Tell me how your day went" conversation at night. They were more like five strangers who happened to live in and share the same house. That wasn't how the Bailey's house was at all. It was nice.

In the mornings, Jacen found himself surrounded by people passing food around, laughing, eating and getting ready to go out the door. They had lunches and great conversations. They were like the Brady Bunch only in high definition. And the best part was that they all helped each other out. It made sense. It was the only way that such a huge household could function properly. And on this morning, Jacen hitched a ride with Mia. Or at least it was her turn to give the new adopted Bailey attention in the morning.

"It's really not all that difficult," Jacen said to her about Physics as he shouldered his backpack and pushed open the doors to Moses Pearson High School. "I think it's just that most people are put off by numbers. I guess it depends on who teaches it to you too. Annie always seems to get when I explain it to her."

Mia didn't know much about what went on in the Allen household, but judging from the fact that Jacen hadn't moved back in even when it seemed like things were okay between he and Josie again said something. She wondered what it was like there. Crazy? Oh, or maybe one of those creepily silent families that never talked on TV until the dad went crazy and-

Mia dragged herself back to reality as Jacen kept on about physics. "Yeah well, Annie's kind of smart," she answered with a small snort. "And so are you. It's a pretty winning combination." Mia's grades had been improving pretty steadily since Jacen's arrival, especially in math. "It's like word problems on crack. No thanks."

Jacen laughed. Sometimes Mia had the funniest expressions. He couldn't help but enjoy her humor. In fact, he felt very comfortable around her, like she could have been his sister in another life, moreso than Josie ever was. He felt close to all the Bailey's actually. That's why it had been so easy to get used to living in a house with so many people. All those people were so nice and welcoming. Jacen wasn't used to that sort of thing.

He shrugged though. "It's not for everyone. And Annie is really smart when she applies herself. She may not like it, but she does know her music though. She's a great singer, and she knows a lot about fashion, so it actually helps me quite a bit, because well... I know nothing about any of those things."

"Hey now," Mia teased, giving him a gentle nudge with her elbow. "I know a lot about fashion, too!" It came with her new-found popular territory after she'd dropped all of the weight. With popularity came a concern about her appearance, make up, hair, and most certainly clothes. "If you ever need me to pick out a date outfit to impress her, I got your back, stud."

Safely within the school, she was warm enough to tug off her sweat shirt, showing off the cheerleading uniform she wore for the pep rally that day. After she tugged the fabric over her head, though, Jacen's face shifted, or at least that was the best way she could think to describe it. One minute, she was looking at his face, and the next... she was staring into a mass of blue streaks, and she let out a small noise of surprise, disoriented, as she latched on to Jacen's arm. The shift, however, had her looking elsewhere, and Mia's gave shifted to the floor, where, to her horror, a giant spider was crawling. It was no ordinary spider. This thing was huge and hairy and she could see every creepy lens of its creepy buggy eyes, earning a more pronounced shriek as she turned her face away into Jacen's chest. "KILL IT!" If she could have jumped on a stool, she would have. As it was, Jacen would have to make do as a shield.

Meanwhile, a tiny black spider, smaller than a thumbtack, scuttled innocently past their feet, unnoticed by the rest of the world.

Jacen chuckled and pretended her nudge actually caused him to sway bit uncertainly as they walked. It was a tiny exaggeration, but it could have clearly been seen as him flirting with her. Not that Jacen knew how to flirt really, but if this was flirting, then he was doing it. "Of course. And that'd be great. I'm terrible when it comes to matching colors and patterns and..."

But Jacen wasn't allowed to finish this thought as he suddenly found himself with a Mia attached to him. It was actually sort of painful the way she was clinging to him and so sudden. Jacen hardly had time to react other than to protect(?) her against him as he discerned the cause of her distress. "Kill.... it? What is it? Or... where is it?" He was looking around expecting to see Godzilla rounding the corner any minute now.

Mia wasn't about to move from her position. If a giant spider was coming after her, she wanted as much between her and it as was humanly possible, even if that meant Jacen was a barrier. Yeah, okay, maybe that was wrong, but Jacen was a guy! Guys could handle spiders!

"The spider!" she exclaimed. It wasn't hard to miss! The thought of its hairy legs had her shuddering all over again. Maybe boys didn't think anything of creepy, huge, hairy spiders, but Mia was having absolutely none of it.

Okay, normally, Jacen would have understood the need to be overly dramatic about an arachnid. He had a sister and knew that girls were deathly afraid of things with more than two legs..... and sometimes just things with two legs too. However, Mia was acting like the spider had gone radioactive and was melting down the entire school. In fact, Jacen didn't even know where to look to find the damn thing.

"I don't see it, Mia. It's gonna be fine. It's just a spider. It's... It's not even on you." And Jacen didn't even want to think about how she would react if it had been on her. He would have probably gone deaf on his other ear by now. "Just show me where you see it and we'll... go in a different direction." Because honestly, he wasn't about a kill a spider that hadn't caused any real damage apart from psychological.

Mia hesitated as he said he couldn't find the spider. Slowly, she peeked one eye open. The room shifted, almost like it was coming back into focus, and she swayed slightly, before righting herself and peering cautiously around the hallway.

"It's gone." She let out a sigh of relief. The thing was so huge that she sincerely doubted there was anywhere it could have hidden. "...You didn't see it?" she asked, confused. The thing was pretty hard to miss, but if it was already gone, it must have been really fast. She grimaced at the thought of a spider scuttling along faster than anyone would have liked. "But it was huge. I mean, huge." Her cheeks pinkened with embarrassment as she realized she'd practically jumped in his arms, and she slowly untangled herself from him. "Sorry."

Huge? Jacen wracked his brain for the comparative sizes of spiders he had read about in books and seen on the television. Huge would have probably been a tarantula or Aragog from Harry Potter. This spider that he couldn't even see? Well, that wasn't huge. Maybe Mia was hallucinating? He didn't think that she had any sort of medical condition, but she was a Senior on the verge of graduating with finals just around the corner. It was possible that the stress of it all was getting to her. It was starting to get to him too.

"No, it's okay," he said once she pulled away from him. He fixed her bag on her shoulder which was slightly askew before grinning at her. "Honestly, I didn't see a thing, but maybe I'm still too asleep to notice huge spiders in the hallway anyway?"
