Madison had to make herself go and sit down on the sofa that was there. This was one of those difficult things but it also kept her from just grabbing him and giving him a hug. Here he was almost crying and she was feeling that tug of not wanting him to be hurt that much. "Carter, you can't let yourself linger too much on the what-ifs in life. No one can change the past. You just have to take what you know and move on with the future. You learn from your mistakes so you hopefully don't repeat them in the future. Maybe your mom and dad were already having problems and she thought having a kid would make things better but they didn't." She ignored the urge to keep her hands firmly on her lap and just reached over a little to brush his bangs back.
"Maybe one day you'll have some answers, but as far as I can tell it didn't have anything to do with you. I'm sure she thinks about you occasionally. You need people who are going to care about you though. Not one who may need to just come to her senses that she let go of a young man I hear is very talented with a camera." She just smiled at him a little, hoping he might cheer up a bit or she was going to feel bad beating him at a light saber battle. Hadn't she already hurt him enough for one lifetime?
