He hadn't heard her. His ears were filled with water, and he hadn't been listening for anything. Therefore, when he finally turned around and faced her, she was literally right there. He blinked and swallowed a lump in his throat that he hadn't noticed before.
He'd always been attracted to her. Always. It was just easier lately to push it to the background when he remembered how miserable they had been as a couple. Bickering and accusations did not constitute a relationship for him. And that was pretty much what theirs was. So when he opened his eyes and she was quite close, he wanted to spit a nasty remark at her and push her away. But he couldn't. Attraction won out and he stood there, frozen, not knowing what to do.
