The wind coming off from the waves of Sebago lake was bitter as Daniel walked along the the beach. Clumps of snow were scattered here and there on the sand but it didn’t impede walking along the beach. Being winter meant the beaches were usually empty now, outside from a scatter bon fire or kids coming down to drink away from the prying eyes of their parents. Daniel was sure he wouldn’t have to worry about either of those things today, at least not this early in the evening. Right now the beach was the perfect place for some privacy. As the teenager trudged through the sand, his eyes flickered to the horizon where the sun loomed above the water. Sunset wouldn’t be for another hour, hour and half at least. Plenty of time for Daniel to do what he had set out to do.
Like it or not, Daniel was stuck with this telekinesis thing and if he was going to live with it then Daniel figured he’d better get used to it. Maybe if he figured out how to control it better then he wouldn’t have so many damn accidents. Practice at home was out of the question because the last thing Daniel wanted was for his parents to find out. It occurred to him in third period that the nearly abandoned beaches would be the perfect place. So here Daniel was, among the surf and the sand, searching for the best place to start. He finally stopped when he came to a place that was more rock than sand. Daniel stood there for a few moments simply looking out across the lake before he took a deep breath and began.
Dark brown eyes sought out a medium size rock, about the size of a basketball. Something Daniel would have been able to lift normally for he found those objects easier. The smaller, the better usually but Daniel wanted something bigger to start with. An object that was more of a challenge. He concentrated on the rock, picturing it floating in the air and soon the real rock followed that idea. It lifted off from the ground smoothly, as if gravity no longer affected it. Daniel couldn’t even begin to explain how he did or how it felt to move something with his mind. He concentrated on that rock until it was shoulder high.
Then he threw it.
The rock suddenly sailed through the air as though it had magically attained the ability to fly before eventually crashing into the water. Now, the next part was going to be tricky. Daniel was going to try lifting two rocks at once. With his attention on searching for two more rocks of a similar size, Daniel didn’t realize that someone was watching him from nearby.
