When they had sat down on the couch together, Grace snuggled somewhat close to Carter while still keeping her hand in his. She didn't want to crowd him, giving him some room, but she was close enough to let him know that she was there. She couldn't think of anything to say even though 50 million things were running through her mind. She wanted to talk to him and take his mind off of this immensely tragic loss that he just suffered, but she just had no words. What could she have said even if she did? The likelihood of getting out a few words that would give him just a hint of comfort was next to none.
Grace sat there with him in silence just looking at him for a moment. She placed her head on his shoulder and kept her hand tight around without squeezing it. She too heard the sirens of the ambulance coming and was hopeful that this would be over soon. Underneath the oncoming echo, there was a familiar, feminine voice. She didn't recognize it as her mom's but she certainly had heard it before.
She lifted her head up off Carter's shoulder and looked to the door as the body that belonged to the voice came in. She saw that it was Mrs. Hudson. Grace didn't know where her mom had gone, maybe to check Grandma Manning, but she called out to Mrs. Hudson softly, "We're in here." She wasn't sure what Mrs. Hudson was doing here but figured that since she had gotten there before the ambulance that Carter must've called or texted her around the time she got hers.
