You're your own worst enemy, At war with yourself, but you can't see. And I can't stand to watch your comet coming fast, Everywhere you go it seems that lightning strikes and then you crash.
It had gone… as expected. Nick walked out of his parents’ house, smoothing a hand through his hair and scratching the back of his head, unsure of what to do now. His father had been creative with his words this time. The usual ‘failure’ and ‘what did I do to deserve this’ had been forgone for telling Nick exactly how much of a screw up he was. He didn’t even care that Nick’s motives had been pure. He’d tried to force him to take the decision back, told him that he had never been this disappointed with anything in his life, and immediately started questioning Lexie’s impact on the situation.
That, really, was the reason Nick hadn’t wanted Lexie there. She was already fragile, already so close to her breaking point. Hearing Nick’s father down-talk her wouldn’t have helped. She would be upset when Nick told her that he’d done it without her there, but it was for the best.
As he sat in his car, he suddenly realized exactly how lost he was now. That was his identity. He was an athlete and losing that was almost like losing his place in town. But it had been necessary. He kept imagining what it would have been like if he’d done what he’d done to Eisen and Rory on the field or on the ice and it was just… it was all he needed. He had to do it, no matter the personal cost. That was what consoled him as he drove home.
Now, though, came the hard part. He didn’t even get out of the car before sliding his phone from his pocket and dialing Lexie’s number.
