The bell had gone and Jane sat at her desk, having seen all her students for the day out, chasing the stragglers that were trying to linger. Once they'd all gone, she returned to what she'd been doing before the lesson ended: moving papers from one pile to another, sorting and sifting to work out what she needed to take home and grade and what she could keep behind to grade tomorrow during one of her free lessons. She looked through the pile, long fingers and painted nails catching the edges of pages as she rifled through them to pull out the one that she wanted.
The paper in front of her had a name scrawled in the top left hand corner and from the way it had been written, the student hadn’t taken any time to put the effort into the paper which made the end result a whole lot more impressive, spoke wonders of the intellect behind the attitude.
She watched the clock tick by, a few minutes had gone by since the bell and she tapped her foot, waiting for the elusive Samuel Young to turn up. He would arrive, she knew that much, because he couldn’t afford not to and she had a feeling that his curiosity would get the better of him. She was kind of hoping that would be the case. Like many of her students, Sam was an enigma, a puzzle. One that she wanted to solve, wanted to take apart and understand. More importantly, she wanted to help.
Long fingers tapping on the table, she tried to convince herself she wasn’t watching the door.
