WHO: Dietre and Francis
WHAT: Francis is driving Dietre and himself to school on this fine Monday morning and decides to bring up the locker incident. Specifically what Elaine has to say about it.
WHEN: Monday, February 07; AM
WHERE: Francis' car
RATING: PG-13 for Francis' mouth
Francis hadn't said much to Dietre even after receiving the apology letter. The car was silent, except for background noise, as they drove away from Francis' house and toward the hellhole called Moses Pearson High. The silence pressed in on him that morning, when other mornings usually it wasn't as bad. There was always a sense of awkwardness between them, but it was an awkwardness that Francis had grown used to enough to find it normal. What he was experiencing currently wasn't even close to that. He wondered if Dietre felt it, but a glance at the teen's face didn't yield much in the way of confirmation either way.
The problem was, despite knowing he needed to say something (something very specific), he wasn't sure how to phrase it without starting another argument. Even if he tried to stay calm, chances were Dietre would push his buttons very quickly. It was almost like that was Dietre's second power – the power to get to him without trying very hard. Maybe not trying at all. Francis knew that was partially his own fault (though he did have to give Dietre some credit), because at first it had been easy to shrug off just about everything the kid said, but now it wasn't so.
"Dietre," he said, as if testing the name on his tongue. It was a name he'd said many times, but maybe never so cautiously. "I spoke to Principal Bennett on Thursday. She said she wants you to turn yourself in; and that she'll ease up on your punishment if you do."
