Ben didn’t know if their conversation right then could be considered friendship, but he figured that they were both going through enough and didn’t need another enemy to add to the list. Things might be able to go back to the way they were before when he apologized to Fiona and told her the truth. Until then, things stayed tense. And Ben would likely never be able to trust Rory the same way again, which was unfortunate. Rory had always been one of his trusted friends, and losing that was disappointing.
“I’ll let you know,” he spoke calmly, not really being honest but not really lying, either. There was a moderate sized list of people that he would tell before Rory – Fiona among them – but he didn’t want to put another ding in Rory’s obviously dented confidence. “I can imagine. That whole thing is ridiculous,” he said quietly. “Listen. I hate to cut this short, Rory, but I have to get home. I have school in the morning and I still have a load of homework to do. So… just let me know or have Fiona let me know when you tell her the truth, okay?” Then, maybe things can be normal again.
