Rory wasn’t exactly sure how they’d gone full circle from being annoyed, to angry, to furious, and then suddenly back to tense friends again, but Rory was struck by Ben’s confession. He’d been scared, too. He still was scared, especially now that he really knew the consequences of his actions. And the most terrifying part is that Rory still honestly had no idea what the extent of these powers were, or whether he could even control them or not. After all, whatever he’d done to Fiona had been unintentional, so who was to say he wouldn’t do something equally as awful (and equally as unintentional) again? Ben’s power may have been useful, and it may have had its downsides as well (after all, it had to be hard, always knowing the truth), but at least he couldn’t really hurt anyone with it.
“Well if you ever need to talk,” Rory said quietly, “I have a pretty good idea what you’re going through. It’s not the same thing, but it’s similar enough.” At Ben’s last words, Rory just barely managed to cover his flinch. “No,” he said, trying to keep his tone even, although the slightest of trembles still appeared in his voice as he spoke. “It’s not easy.” It’s not even close to easy. “And the betting pool is really hard on him.”
