Rory caught the contempt on Ben’s face when he mentioned Charlie, but he pressed on in spite of it. He wasn’t terribly surprised, given how angry Ben was. At least it didn’t look like Ben didn’t believe him. That, Rory thought, was to his credit. In Ben’s place he probably would’ve been completely incredulous. Of course, he hadn’t seemed too terribly shocked when Rory brought up the existence of strange abilities in the first place, so maybe Ben had just been desensitized to it. Either way, at least he wasn’t accusing Rory of lying. That was something.
He flinched at Ben’s questions. Somewhere in his heart, he’d been expecting them. Ben had already tried to get the truth out of him once, and failed. But this time was different. This time Rory was much more vulnerable, and besides, it was harder to hide things in person than over a text message. He shifted his gaze from Ben for a moment, his eyes involuntarily drawn to the photo of Eisen that he kept on his desk. “I don’t disagree with you, Ben.” He said quietly. “Your sister is one of the best people I know. She deserves the world. She deserves... better than what she gets.” He looked over at Ben. “Better than me. The faster she moves on from me, the better.”
