This was for the kids. That was what Jack kept reminding himself as he parked the EUUC van in front of Ethan’s workplace, a group of eight children in the back seat. They seemed ready to cause more trouble than good right then, and he was starting to regret turning down offers for help. He had figured that eight kids wouldn’t be too hard, right? Besides, they were all about to see a TV character they loved, and the Reverend sincerely began to hope that they would behave the moment Ethan came out in character to talk about the Big Bang. The Sunday school classes had just finished learning about Genesis, and it only seemed fair to teach them about the scientific theory now, as well as a few other cultures’ ideas on it. He had a movie about Native American stories for them that Sunday as well.
Getting out of the van, Jack began to help the kids hop onto the black drive way, his ears peeled for the blond who knew just how to be incredibly endearing in all the right ways. Jack liked Ethan; he just wasn’t sure how to go about courting the man. After all, almost half of his life had been spent in total celibacy and no dating whatsoever. And when he’d gotten to the island, the excuse of being ‘too busy’ had stayed firmly in place until the last few years. About to turn forty, lonely, and all alone had begun to make Jack think about romance. About having a special someone, and Ethan sure did fill the bill nicely.
Which was why he had every intention of asking the other man out to coffee, maybe even to join him for dinner on Valentine’s. And when the Reverend Dr. Jackson Duff set his mind to something, he did it.
